I remember having a big dance party at my house my junior year of high school for all my homeschool speech and debate friends and their familiess. I originally made a stupid indie-and-dadrock playlist, but I remember halfway through I put on this album before heading out to be with the girl I liked outside. An hour later, nobody had changed it, and everyone was still seeming to be having a blast. I don't know if this was just their low standards (since I sure don't think it's consistent all the way through), but it sure was a moment.

I thought it was massive when it first came out. Its appeal got lost on the way, and I find some bits like Drugs Don't Work or Lucky Man pretty dull as individual tracks, but Bitter Sweet Symphony will last ages and I think it works well as a whole.

Honestly... I'll have to give it a spin.

When these guys came out I didn't think much more than a one hit wonder band.

This album surprised me at the time. "Bittersweet Symphony" is this sort of singular accomplishment and I didn't expect the album to really live up to its promise. And while nothing matches that single, the rest of the album is really quite good. I am pleasantly surprised to see the album so well-regarded on BEA, even though I don't think it'd make my top 200.

Bought it when it came out on the strength of the first two singles. One of the first CDs I donated to charity. No regrets, especially since they're from Wigan.

I was 16 when this came out, and all the "cool" try-hards loved it.

I tend to lump it in with No Doubt's "Tragic Kingdom", which dropped in a similar time frame, in that I found it to be a proper singles album (the singles, that everyone bought it on the strength of, were far and away the strongest tracks). Haven't listened to it in at least 15 years.

I still think Drugs Don't Work is the strongest song on here, but yeah, it's a lot of filler with a couple good singles.

Agree that everything that isn't a single is terrible, but I also cannot stand Bittersweet Symphony, The Drugs Don't Work, or Sonnet. So yeah, this album is entirely forgettable for me. Not really sure what turns me off of it, but I think it has to do with being a little too earnest.
