  • Post subject: Musical "Phases" You've Gone Through
  • Quote
Do any of you guys go through phases in music? You know, where you become obsessed with a certain artist or genre for a few months, then lost interest?

Here are some that I've been on:
*Animal Collective Phase (early 2009): After hearing about the wonders of MPP, I got briefly obsessed with the band, accumulating much of their discography. But once I realized that it was simply noise, I got bored.
*Epic Prog Phase (late 2009): After hearing the wonders of Tarkus,a and realizing how incredibly cheap these albums can be on eMusic, I went on a prog binge. I even considered getting an Asia album at the time 😲
*Doom Metal/Sludge Rock/Heavy Prog Phase (late 2010-today): This is the current phase I'm in. Anything sludgy I immediately fall in love with. Because of that, I ended up buying Electric Wizard's whole discography. I'd hate to say it, but I'm afraid this will end up like my other two phases in the next few months.

What about you guys?

Good thread, and one I can relate too.

From...meh, i'll start at 2003. From 2003-04 I was into R&B, and Country, and the BeeGee's & Queen 🤣 , cause that was pretty much all the music I even knew.

From 05-07 I was kind of a metalhead, like Swedish, Polish, Finnish, Norwegian, all that sort of stuff. I'm glad I was influenced by that from the start, cause it allowed me to accept a lot of 'unusual' artists right off the start, like Captain Beefheart, Neutral Milk Hotel, stuff like that. It also allowed me to not be scared of listening to hard rock stuff, cause I know I can like it eventually.

08-09, I was obsessed with Phoenix, Metric and Coldplay. Seriously. I was also listening to some 80's and 90's hip-hop, like Wu-Tang, Tupac, N.W.A., it wasn't until now that i've gone into alternative hip-hop.

09-, I've started exploring a lot more music, from the 50's- to now. Got into Jazz, Latin and Indie Rock a bit more than I ever expected, and ever thought I would understand. I also found this website, which has helped me find a lot of good albums, now and then. Found new personal favourites, like The Velvet Underground, Arcade Fire, Radiohead & The Flaming Lips, and for the later 3, I think I like them cause they're still active, and I could be like "Hey, they have a new album out! I'll see when the tour is", stuff like that.

All through this I've listened to the obvious 'classic' albums, and family favourites.

Originally I was a soundtrack nut, and basically listened to just instrumental music. This turned me on to ambient music, which led me to discover Aphex Twin. Soundtracks also introduced me to a wide variety of genres without me consciously separating them - I just thought of them all as good music.

At around this time my brother got into Coldplay, and I decided they weren't so bad, and started listening to more song-based music.

Then one fateful day while looking for ambient music, I discovered the myspace page of a band called Porcupine Tree. The first song I heard of theirs was Half Light, and it blew my mind right open - I never realized music could affect me the way that song just did. The subsequent Porcupine Tree songs I devoured then did something that seemed quite natural to me - they didn't stick to a genre, and they focused on texture and mood. They also did something I'd never heard done before - they played in odd time signatures. Not only this, but they made these strange angular song structures extremely catchy and groove-orientated. I knew without a doubt that I had found my new favourite band, and I immediately began to seek similar music.

I soon came to find that they were categorized as progressive rock, and I went on a huge progressive rock binge: Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes, Camel, Gong, etc. I also discovered Radiohead around this time. I became more used to the heavier aspects of Porcupine Tree's sound, and slowly broadened my horizons. Sigur Ros was a significant discovery as well, introducing me to post-rock.

It later became clear to me that progressive rock wasn't the genre that encapsulated my tastes. It was Porcupine Tree's production-focused angle that attracted me, that moved me. The very first thing I look for when I listen to a song is its immediate aesthetic impact. So I began to investigate a genre that did this well: avant-garde.

That's roughly where I am now: on a major Deerhoof binge, and completely infatuated with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

91-93: acid jazz/jazz (Guru's Jazzamatazz/Brand New Heavies/Blue Note)
93-95: hip hop (De La Soul/Del/Souls Of Mischief/Public Enemy/Digable Planets/Tribe)
95-97/98: alternative/grunge (playing catch-up for the previous 5 or so years!)
97-98: REM - bought every album, watched every concert video
95-2000: Smashing Pumpkins - major obsession beginning with seeing them live on the Mellon Collie tour, consequently bought every studio recording i could. Seeked out bootleg concert cds, then trawled the internet and have got pretty much everything they ever recorded)
2000-2001: arrived in London so the year was all dance music/breakbeat/drum+bass/funk
2001-onwards: turned my back on dance music after seeing Strokes/White Stripes/BRMC live. Now i'm really only interest in 'guitar music' with some hip hop, certain electronic music, reggae, jazz thrown in.

I go through phases when i get into a band/artist and for the following weeks/months buy all the albums in their catalogue (AYWKUBTTOTD, Bouncing Souls, Black Keys to name a few)

also go through phases where i totally get into a certain genre - 3 years ago i saw a NoFX documentry and was into American Punk. I'd only previously listened to Green Day, but now have cds from Descendents, Pennywise, all of NoFXs, Bouncing Souls, Social Distortion, Bronx, Mad Caddies, Pinhead Gunpowder, Operation Ivy etc....
Last year i decided to hunt down hip hop (mostly east coast) from the years 1988-1996.
Earlier this year after listening to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco i started listening to a lot of similiar alt-country stuff: Bottle Rockets, Uncle Tupelo, Cowboy Junkies, Drive-By Truckers etc.
And the last couple of weeks i've gone through a bit of a metal phase - finally listened to Slayers' "Reign In Blood" (didn't like it), Metallica (Ride the Lightning/Master Of Puppets), and all of Killswitch Engage. I even bought an Iron Maiden album!

who knows what next week will hold?

I went through a Human League phase where I was obsessed with them, now their music dosen't amaze me as much, I stil like it but not as much as I did then.

This was all part of a bigger phase, I absolutely loved 80's synthpop, mostly Eurythmics, Ultravox, Soft Cell and Heaven 17.

Even if I'm only 17 I've gone through many music phases...
When I was a child (10 years old) I started listening to italian hip-hop (Fabri Fibra, Mondomarcio) and to Eamon... well, it wasn't very good, but I liked it...
This phase lasted 3 years, then I started listening to The Kooks, The Hoosiers and something of U2...
An year later I started listening to music with a capital M...
I got the complete discography of the Strokes and fell in love with them, so I started searching others indie bands and i discovered the libertines, babyshambles, the raconteurs and white stripes...
Then, i think it was 2/01/2010, I've heard Fake Plastic Trees (Radiohead) and I left everything on my Ipod and got every single radiohead's album...
Nowadays I only listen to Radiohead, I can't hear anything else (only Strokes, Sigur Ros and XX)
