I'm new to the site and have been finding it quite frustrating how long I have to wait to be able to create 'year' charts. So as a substitute I'm wondering if there is anyway to create a specific Genre chart.. or if there isn't don't you think it would be a good idea? I listen to a wide variety of music, but comparing something like Thrash Metal with country & western is like apples and oranges.. the thrash band could be amazing for their genre but how do you decide if they are better than the other album.. too many variations... sorry for ranting.

I'm not sure what you mean by genre charts? Is it your own personnel opinions of what album belongs to what genre or would every album need to be assigned a genre.Would you have separate Techno,Electro,Dubstep charts or would you have them all under Electronic music?Would you class shoe gaze as indie or give it it's own genre? There's so many genres and sub genres and sub sub genres I have over 100 genres in my itunes alone it would lead to a lot of cluttering on the site. It's a nice idea, but very impractical and with year charts now being introduced peoples chart pages would start to get very cluttered and messy. Also I think it's the beauty of BEA that every thing is together,it makes the discovering of music all the more erratic and random.

I think it's something you can do with the upcoming "just for fun" charts

there's a couple of new features in the pipeline which will address this. First, the ability to create any type of chart that you want with any selection of albums that you choose. These charts will be non-scoring 'just for fun'. Secondly, after 'fun charts' have been introduced the ability will be added to 'tag' any item on the site and then create filters based on those tags. For example. this would allow you to filter the overall chart for albums tagged 'jazz', 'heavy metal' etc, and the custom chart feature will also be extended to allow you to filter by tag as well.

As long as everyone tags things right this will be excellent, top idea.

Haha yeah that's exactly what I mean. Or you'll search for a certain genre and loads of stuff will come up that definately shouldn't qualify, that would be really annoying.

There was a time when there were like maybe 8 genres.

It's stupid out of control now.

I'd love that. I've spent the last three hours trying to find some Ragtime albums on here, and I can't.

Genre charts would help greatly in my search.
