I listened to one of my new purchases today - The Airborne Toxic Event - Self-Titled. I was really impressed with it and think they're one of the more interesting discoveries i've had recently (top spot is currently held by Silversun Pickups). While I was listening to the album, i did a little reading up on the band on wikipedia and while the album and band generally had great reviews, I was surprised that Pitchfork went the other way and really hated on the band:
"The record was received with mostly favorable reviews from such outlets as the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, Q, Entertainment Weekly, and Drowned in Sound, among others. Notably, the Boston Herald named the band's album "The Debut Album of the Year."[9] In addition, on Dec 6, 2008, iTunes named "Sometime Around Midnight" the #1 Alternative Song of the Year on their Best of 2008 list.[10] One exception was the review on the music website Pitchfork Media, by Ian Cohen, who gave the record 1.6 out of 10 stars and accused the band of imitating the worst aspects of bands such as Arcade Fire, The Strokes, and Interpol.[11] In response, the band released a statement saying that it does not take reviews too seriously and criticized Pitchfork for basing their critiques on "a band's ability to match a certain indie rock aesthetic" rather than a band's other merits, and claiming that much of the review "reads less like a record review and more like a diatribe against a set of ill-considered and borderline offensive preconceptions about Los Angeles".[12]"
I feel Pitchfork was waaay off the mark here (not for the first time either) and wondered what other albums have received less-than-favorable reviews but are actually really good?? _________________ "Bunch of opinionated, hipster twats!"
Sorry, but i have to agree with this review. I really do despise Eminem, yes he is talented, but his lyrics are just plain awful. "Lose Yourself" is the only song I remotely like, and the lyrics are probably the most positive he's ever written. _________________ "Bunch of opinionated, hipster twats!"
Manchester Orchestra's newest album, Simple Math. Very well recieved by critics for the most part, but this reviewer from Paste seemed to dislike most of it.
Either way I think it was by far the most under appreciated album of the 2011. Best one I heard all year, yet so many people don't even know it exists.

I agree...while I prefer 'Mean Everything to Nothing', 'Simple Math' is by no means a bad album at all, especially compared to what else was released that year in similar genres..... _________________ "Bunch of opinionated, hipster twats!"
I know the odd reviewer still reveres it out of respect for the Beatles, but I've always felt that Let It Be gets unfairly slammed. I've seen it get 0/5, 2/10, etc... Really? It's a bit of a let-down, but by any other band... ๐ค

R.E.M.'s last two albums, Accelerate and Collapse Into Now I think are highly underrated. 13th and 14th out of all of their albums. Sure their last years weren't what they were before, but in someways I actually like these last two albums than any album but murmur in the 80s.
