Simple. Why the hell Radiohead? They're good imo but I'm not sure #2 good. Thats just my thought though. I used to be really into these guys and I still love The Bends and Kid A, occasionally In Rainbows. What's your opinion, It's always been a BEA mystery to me.

I'm a fan, but I'll try to be as neutral and objective as possible:

It helps that they've been remarkably consistent in their output, and that each of their albums stands up as an authentic artistic statement (albeit with heavy outside influences). They don't crank out albums of filler to serve their bank accounts or egos. This affords them a great deal of respect in the music world even if they aren't everyone's cup of tea. Young people interested in something a little deeper will inevitably be drawn to them.

They remind me a lot of David Bowie in the 70s, in that they have their finger on the pulse of the avant-garde and have a remarkable knack of refactoring some of those experiments into a refined (some might say sanitised) version peculiar to their own alt-rock sensibility. Nothing on Kid A is groundbreaking but there's something undeniably impressive about how they manage to bring together all these multivariate sounds and interests into one cohesive and relatively immediate and accessible whole.

For me, they've been an invaluable springboard to pretty much every single other genre I've ever been interested in, and those elements of each genre which grab my interest are inflected with the same kind of bleakness and dissonance of Radiohead's aesthetic.

Love them. Been a fan since 'The Bends' and although not every album is as good or surprising, still think the average quality is very high. They also still manage to capture a big 50K+ crowd with 'difficult' music.

It's hard to explain. They're in my top 2, but the reason... well... They take me to a place no other music does, quite a transcendent place, and imo they're the closest recent generations have had to the Beatles, in terms of mixing experimentation and obscure influences into something pretty accessible. Obviously they are not as popular as the Beatles, but no-one that's any good really is atm. Also Nigel Godrich is a fucking amazing producer, so that helps!
