  • Post subject: How about Scottish bands and musicians?
When I was really young in the 80s, there were all these bands that I thought were so great from Scotland. Some of the ones I liked were Big Country, The Proclaimers, Altered Images, Cocteau twins and a shitload more. And then I found out that a lot of even older musicians that I liked from the seventies were Scottish too . Like Donovan , Al Stewart , Jethro Tull . But I hardly know any recent ones. Besides Franz Ferdinand. What are some more good Scottish musicians either old or new?

I still vouch BEA should designate bands as Scottish, English or Welsh rather than just blanketed under 'UK'. I'm not entirely sure why we don't.

Look no further than some of BEA's favourites: Belle & Sebastian, The Jesus and Mary Chain and Boards of Canada.

I also really like Mogwai, Orange Juice, Camera Obscura, Primal Scream and Close Lobsters. Scotland's so nice, I want to back!

While like most, I put a lot of UK bands at the top of my heap, I think few of them have been specifically Scottish. A few second tier artists for me though.

Top of the Heap

Surprisingly, none that I can think of

Other honorable mentions

Big Country
Nazareth

One (or two) Hit (at least for me) Wonders

Lulu
Average White Band
Sheena Easton
Simple Minds
Annie Lennox
Gerry Rafferty
Al Stewart

Ian Anderson is Scottish, but as a whole Jethro Tull aren't. Ditto the Young brothers but not AC/DC and the Knopfler brothers but not Dire Straits

Now that's just pop/rock. I'm also a big Celtic fan and here's some Celtic artists from Scotland that I play regularly:
Silly Wizard
Sileas
The Battlefield Band
The Poozies
The Tannahill Weavers
Capercaille

And of course, there are Scottish groups who fuse rock and traditional Celtic sounds, most notably the great Wolfstone.

I can't believe someone else likes big country. I thought Gerry Rafferty was American, I didn't know he was Scottish
