Two of the best(?) art pop albums of the 60s. Well, certainly the most influential. Rolling Stone put Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band as the number 1 best album ever, while Pet Sounds was second. What do fine people on BEA have to say about the debate? Beach Boyz or Beatles Boyz?

Too close to call. I go back and forth on these, rating them virtually equal. Maybe Ill revisit them and get back to you with a vote/personal conclusion.

The real answer is Skylarking though 😉 ...except the 60's part, though it might as well be.

Sgt. Peppers for me and its not really even that close.

Pet sounds is a great album and I could only imagine how it would have sounded in 66. With that said, I think The Beatles catalog aged a whole lot better. If Pet Sounds was a 10/10 in 1966 its an 8/10 now in my opinion (still a great score, but I've rated a lot of albums an 8 ).

Both outstanding. I gotta go with Pet Sounds. It works better as a whole and compositionally I think it's a little more sophisticated whilst remaining totally accessible. Its number one on my overall so would actually win against any other album (I have Pepper at a lowly 32 currently 🤣 )

I just prefer the songs and flow of Sgt Pepper a bit more, but Pet Sounds is a triumph. I remember the moment the CD was finished the first time I ever listened to Pet Sounds I said something along the lines of "Well, that was perfect." However, (especially with the new mix) I find myself returning to Sgt Pepper much more.

Though, I would say that Wouldn't It Be Nice is one of the most pristine examples of pop song perfection ever.
