Cory Arcane by Kangding Ray

Nominated by Norman Bates

Mindfully minimal, interesting constructions of drama, bass, syncopation. Harkens to the Milli Plateu experiments of say the early 1990s to my mind, as well as the latter New York City Illbient Scene of the late 90s; also melds into the best of what was occurring in the early 2000s with Grime in the UK, and has echos of some the highlights of the ambient dub & the best dubsteppish post IDM/post drum N bass sounds from the MID 2000'S.

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITE. PLEASE LISTEN TO BOTH ALBUMS BEFORE VOTING

I haven't really given Kangding Ray enough attention, I'll need to spend a bit of time with this one before voting but it's sounding very nice so far.

So far this Arcane is hot fire. Hell if it plays it's cards right, this can get close or in my top 10 of 2015.

I don't know the first thing about Kangding Ray and if Norm hadn't nominated it then I doubt I'd have given it a spin. And it's pretty relentless. Can't see me listening to it again in a hurry. Sounds like the kind of techno you'd imagine people who like Death Grips getting into. But then what do I know...

...which brings me onto "The Brown Album". My all-time favourite 'electronic' (hate that term) LP, one of my top 20 records of all-time and as much a treat for the head as it is for the dancefloor. And yeah, I'm totally attached to it because of all the memories it brings flooding back and yeah, those hearing it for the first time might find it a little dated, but for those of us havin' it large in the 90s this encapsulates the mood and the music better than anything else I can think of. Lush, Impact, Walk Now - banger after banger - and then the mini-comedown-but-still-buzzing-back-to-reality vibes of Monday ('cos Monday sure does hurt...) before you're whisked off to some rave bliss with Halcyon & On & On, which (along with Belfast) is the best thing the brothers Hartnoll ever did.

Call me an old raver, but for me Orbital 2/Brown/whatever you want to call it should win this tournament at a canter...

I have to listen to Corey Arcane first. I never heard of that one before. That description sounded good. I liked that illbient thing from the 90s, although I only think I've heard one artist who did it, DJ Spooky. And I surely love that.

I'm yet to hear Norm's selection, but have to admit that Orbital's second album was one of the key records for me back in the 90's. It was one of the first truly great IDM LP's and helped electronic music become a genre that was capable of sustaining quality tracks throughout a whole album. Key tracks for me were Walk Now, Lush, and Halcyon.

Cory Arcane was really good. I didn't get bored for a second. Everything was so crisp and clear and everything's in the right place. Too much of the current experimental techno stuff is just too blurry or something. It's like it all blurs together or something and nothing really leaves much of an impression or sticks in your head. The Beats on this are definitely not boring. And I loved a lot of the sounds they come up with. Especially that one that sounded kind of like a rattlesnake. That was cool. I'll probably listen to it again. As for voting, Orbital has been one of my favorite Acts for like 20 years. And I can't say Corey Arcane was better. And even though Orbital 2 is no longer my favorite or even second or third favorite orbital album anymore, it's still awesome. Someone mentioned it sounded dated but I don't think it sounds too dated. With the exception of the two Lush, which I never really liked anyway. They sound like leftovers from Orbital 1. The rest of it sounds fine though. The first Orbital sounds horribly dated but none of their other stuff does. To me anyway.

oh dude well if you're not on top of the Raster Noton stuff, they definitely deserved some representation here. I feel like they have this sort of low res hifi sound where its like really clean and cold and precise but there is a certain simplicity to the timbre. though that's most extreme in the work of the founders, frank bretschnieder and olaf bender. bender's stuff as byetone is my favorite, if you haven't heard Symeta, I strongly recommend it. that one is fantastic. I look forward to spending more time with this Kangding Ray album but at the end of the day I still had to vote Orbital because it is a classic.

It's a shame about (Kangding) Ray - Orbital wins 6-3
