Distortion is one of the 6 best songs of Now Only, one of the most underrated albums of 2018 in my opinion. Faceshopping is an interesting piece of a musical genre (Deconstructed Club) with which I have more difficulty but that SOPHIE allowed me to appreciate a little more in 2018. Mount Eerie wins.

Yeah definitely liking this Sophie song alot more than GeniunePonyBoy, feels less one-note and lots of interesting things going on (yes, in a "deconstructed club" sort of way, but like all her/they (don't @me) songs, I admire it in a very detached way. Distortion, well, is just Phi Elvirium doing very Phil Elvirium things, and that's always welcome. Gonna need to think about this.

i like mount eerie but the song choice here is a bit middling, but i like it a lot more than sophie's experiments on faceshopping here

I wasn't a huge fan of 2017's A Crow Looked At Me, but when I first heard Distortion I was completely blown away. It has the type of meandering storytelling that I've come to love from Mark Kozelek, but it's miles better than anything Kozelek has ever done. It effortlessly switches between really personal details and existential musings, with my favorite being at the end of the third verse where he starts rambling about where he fits into the universe before casually mentioning the girl he was with had her period and he wasn't going to be a father. And of course there's the beginning of the last verse which I've never not cried to, as well as all of his metaphors for death - distortion, the silence of space, the night palace, the ocean blurring. I know it's a mostly lyrics based song but the music suits it well I think, as the third verse introduces some complexity.

The SOPHIE track was better than Ponyboy but it's not getting my vote over what may be my favorite song of... ever.
