i can't speak to the meaning of an archer of loaf, but i like it for being cryptic. and i will also vouch for this incredible album. wicked underappreciated. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.
But what is an Archer of Loaf? Is the Loaf the weapon or who they are fighting for? It just leaves too many questions unanswered.
I would assume the Loaf is who they are fighting for (or most likely defending on behalf of). Arching loaves would be silly. _________________ Doubles & Conch
Or maybe it means people who are "arch" (the best) at loafing around. Or people who are "arch" (playful) as they loaf around. I also like the ambiguity. _________________ Join us in the canon game / Add me on RYM
It basically means nothing, but they make up things to fool people.
Quote:
They opened the dictionary and pointed their finger randomly. The first word they placed their finger on was archer. Since there is more then one member of the band, they made archer plural. Hence, Archers. They opened it up again and landed on another noun. The third time they opened it up they landed on loaf. Thenceforth, Archers of Loaf.

Eric: “It’s a riddle. It means something in Russian, but we intentionally mistranslated it. Work it out.”
That sounds like the sort of response you’d get from a band with several different ludicrous answers to that question.
Eric: “Oh, no. That’s that only answer.”

Looking back, we thought people were attacking us for asking about the name or something, when they were just interested! We were like, ‘fuck you, we’re just trying to do what we do’ and like, hey, they like you. Looking back we didn’t have to be hostile to people, we were just insecure and afraid of success, thought it might change us or whatever. You can look back and smile and laugh at it. I don’t mind people asking what the name is because it’s a ridiculous name. It’s so distinctive, and if you can celebrate within the knowledge of being ridiculous, it’s rewarding.

The band's name comes from an odd story about Gentling's former next-door neighbor. "He had a longbow, and he would sit out in the backyard and shoot targets and stuff," Johnson explains. "Apparently he was pretty good. But
one day Matt was out there and apparently the guy didn't know that Matt was there, and he was like shooting a loaf of bread at a target 20 yards away. He would shoot it, and it would of course just hit the ground about 10 feet away, and he'd go pick it up. It was just kind of strange."
