Big Shark. It's just called Big Shark. Tommy fucking Wisaleau. I've never been this excited for a shark movie before.

It's supposed to come out this year.

Maybe if itโ€™s delayed (which itโ€™ll probably fucking have to be if it comes out at all), maybe it can open Cannes 2021

Think the last update, which said it wasn't ready to be screened, was Sept. 2019. Hopefully they finished shooting before the pandemic. Have a feeling they didn't. And like Applerill said, there's always a chance it won't come out at all.

It could be bad-great, or it could just be bad-bad. When an outsider artist -- for purposes of this discussion, I'm calling Wiseau an outsider writer-director-actor -- is aware that his work is beloved because it's bad, can he repeat the success? If he deliberately sets out to make a bad movie -- assuming he does -- instead of making a bad one thinking he's making a good one, does the self-awareness make it bad-bad instead of bad-good?

William Hung's American Idol audition was hilarious, though uncomfortable because he seemed like he might be mentally challenged to some degree. When he performed on the season finale in a ruffled shirt with professional stage lighting, the magic was gone, because he sang better -- it was still bad, but not bad enough to be funny anymore.

The trailer's not that funny and the scenes seem more professional, so maybe the Hung example's apropos.

Thatโ€™s true, but Wiseau is such a uniquely absurd character that even a โ€œbad badโ€ movie by him seems like a lot of fun.

When I think about it, I guess Iโ€™m more of a Wiseau completist than most people, as I found his The Neighbors series amusing enough (I still think about the scene where they pass around a $20 bill across the room through a chain of people who owe each other), and while I remember very little of it, the โ€œcompetentโ€ filmmaking of Best Friends Volume 1 actually made The ridiculous plot twists way more viscerally astounding when I saw it at the Music Box a couple years ago. So I still have hope that, if this comes out at all, itโ€™ll be a pretty pleasant surprise.
