Alright, alright, so I missed the deadline. I know you've all been staying up late at night, wracked with pain and suspense, just wasting away inside as you await with baited breath the results of this tournament. Well, wait no more, as at long last the results have been revealed, and once more your life has meaning! Huzzah!

First up, who got knocked out?
Lou Reed, Victor Jara (may his reputation be spread on BEA thanks to this, but also apologies for imprinting the wrong spelling in everyone's minds), Beck, Matt Berninger, Neko Case, Cole Porter (he didn't have that thing), Nick Drake (wait, what??), and Josh Tillman

Leaving us with what, exactly, as our round three matchup?

3a: Daniel Dumile vs. Tom Waits
3b: Janelle Monáe vs. Phil Elverum
3c: billy woods vs. Van Morrison
3d: André 3000 vs. Bill Callllahan

(and yes, if you check the math of the last round, you'll see Lou Reed and Daniel Dumile were tied. I only vote in tie breakers, so I gave it to Dumile)

Laughing

Much tear for the Beck loss but makes sense for those who are playing.

3a: Daniel Dumile vs. Tom Waits
3b: Janelle Monáe vs. Phil Elverum
3c: billy woods vs. Van Morrison
3d: André 3000 vs. Bill Callllahan

I haven't really been too taken by Daniel Dumile's projects. I remember being excited to listen to Madvillainy cuz all the hype and was greatly disappointed. Then the Mm food with MF doom and while I liked that better wasn't like woah, this is the shit! It's probably me being boring, but it just never has done anything for me. On the other hand Tom Waits is incredibly clever and heartfelt and insane. My favorite part about Tom Waits is his role in Mystery Men. well not really, but it's hysterical nonetheless.

Janelle I jam to, I don't really even pay attention to the lyrics most times to honest. The only thing I can really remember her saying is this is what they call classy Brass. So nothing that really is of importance, whereas Phil Elverum made me cry and blew my mind.

Billy Woods was a first listen this year for me. It was pretty good, but again nothing really stood out to me as shit my pants worthy. Van Morrison's work with the single Brown Eyed girl would be enough to make me vote here, but then all the other work he did is 10x even more amazing. Brown Eyed Girl is easily one of the greatest pop songs ever written tho.

Bill Callllahan is also someone new to me this year. Didn't leave that great of an impression on me. André 3000 though is easily top rapper for me for so many reasons, but if you just want to focus on the formalist approach, dude's flow is unbelievably smooth and complex, yet it doesn't feel like it. It just works and you don't even have to think about it, but if you do your mind is blown how he pulls some of that stuff off. Like nobody else could. But then move to his style and not just the words and it's like wow, I didn't think this could get better and it just keeps getting better. Plus his wild side is a bit crazy.

So possibly if I played like some other players with the obstain, I'd only really feel pretty good about my first two votes and the last two I've only listened enough to not be guessing here/maybe I'll give them another spin and revisit pending deadline. But even if I did it was like the argument earlier - I'm going to have a VERY hard time voting against those picks because they've provided a lifetime of great lyrics/songwriting to me and the others I'm like huh?
