I gotta say that both of these visualizer lyric/music videos make my eyes hurt lol
Two solid bops, obviously I'm voting for "Life" which I nominated, but "Good Luck, Babe!" was the biggest song of 2024 for like... a week until "Espresso" dropped. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!
It's a good track, but I still wish it has a stronger bridge. For what should be explosive, I can't get over how flat the verse to chorus transition is. Roan's actual performance and the candid lyrics are a really refreshing treat in the world of pop though.
Despite being one of the most overplayed songs in recent memory, Good Luck Babe hasn't lost any of its power. Life is much more in my wheelhouse sonically and it gets my vote, but I wouldn't mind seeing either one in the next round. _________________ Overall chart Fake overall chart
Semi-unrelated, but Chappell Roan killed it at the Grammys last night. If you can catch her performance somewhere, do. I didn't watch the show live, but word is it was one of the best ceremonies in recent memory.
She performed Pink Pony Club (not Good Luck Babe!), and it was stellar. Her confidence and stage-presence is unreal for a relative newcomer.
Not familiar prior with Benson Boone or Doechii, but they put on fantastic performances tooโ likewise Raye, but kinda knew her beforeโ

I remember first hearing Roan during the pandemic, I think it was that one song that had yet another Regina George reference is all I remember, remembering "oh this is slick but catchy enough" but never coming back to it. And then 2024 happened and even my out-of-touch old ass couldn't escape her popping everywhere, in every discussion ("Your Favorite Party's Favorite Party!"). That was wild, especially because she's been doing this since the second Obama administration? I guess even she was unnerved by the sudden fame. I can see through performances and appearances why people are excited, but listening as a music fan... hate to be that asshole but I just don't hear it. Too much of that post-1989 syndrome where any sense of spotenanity has to be cut to the bone so it exists as an immaculate if decepitively brittle glass elephant. It just feels like looking at the actual content the music should not only be more... mercurial? but also campier and a bit out of control, which it never really is. Even this song, this kind of Irony feels overused even with the sapphic twist this time around. Probably would've been saved it had a more soaring intro to the chorus, I agree with that.
Honestly I can't believe people are criticizing the bridge; it's literally the best part of Good Luck, Babe!
Anyway, Life is a great and fun track, but doesn't come close to winning my vote against one of the songs of the year. _________________ Join us in the canon game :) / Add me on RYM
