It's a shame we haven't had one of those listening club threads (yet) this year (it's been a bit quieter here than usual), but is there any value to starting a 2025 listening club thread up and anyone want to take up the mantle? (e.g. choose an album from the current year to listen to/comment on and then move on to the next one). Also, we're midway through the decade, so perhaps a 2020s listening club (instead?) to expand the conversation on BEA to 'newer' albums.

It would be awesome to participate ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ™
I'm ready to submit albums.

And if it becomes a 2020s listening club, it would expand the conversation on BEA to 'older' albums too.

Sorry, meant 'newer' compared to the canon that BEA often discusses

That's fine. II thought it would be great especially for albums that might have gotten overlooked in the current decade.
Yet if most users are interested in the 'new' instead of 'what has been', then a listening club of new releases would gain more attraction.

The aim would be to add more focus to 'current' music (including music from the current decade) and provide more of a platform for these albums to be discussed/discovered together. Many users may be more interested in the best of the latest generation of music, rather than some of the more established albums, and it would be good to try and add more variety.

Yes. Depending on what users have to say regarding this, we would observe how varied our interests are.

Iโ€™d be more than happy to help contribute to a 2025 thread or 2020โ€™s thread. Iโ€™m up for it

Iโ€™ve got a 2025 album in mind. Iโ€™ll draft a bit about the album and then post it. Iโ€™m a bit busy this weekend (heading to a jazz festival) but will try to do something early next week. I think that itโ€™s an awesome album but one which might not be on a lot of peopleโ€™s radar

Sorry folks. Iโ€™ve been really tied up this week and not been particularly active on the site.

Album suggestion coming up this weekend, hopefully

This is my first contribution to the 2025 Listening Club

Electric War (2025) by Little Barrie & Malcolm Catto

This album contains many of my favourite genre of music, whether that be funk, rock, blues, jazz or psychedelic (with a tad of hip-hop thrown in) all melded into what I consider the best album of 2025 (so far!).

That combination of style might feel like the band cannot make itโ€™s mind up what it is but in fact they use those influences to create something that is very much their own.

Little Barrie (the fabulous Barrie Cadogan on guitar and Lewis Wharton on Bass) collaborating with drummer Malcom Catto to produce this cracker of an album.

I have seen this album described as having a โ€œraw, understated and minimal feelโ€ which is pretty accurate which I guess is not that strange when you consider you only have three instruments on show here.

Itโ€™s always useful to tell people who they sound like. If thatโ€™s appropriate. The band tend to hit a great groove and stick to it blending elements of Silver Apples with Can, with a funky drum and bass combo.

Throw a little Hendrix esque guitar in there and an occasional Stone Roses groove and you have a sound that I find captivating.

A couple of later tracks venture into Led Zep territory as well as a little discordant jazzy stuff.

The album certainly has many nods to the past but feels like something that is completely new. Quite a feat.

And here's a little flavour of what to expect
