I'm part of a number of online listening groups and one which i thought I might share is the Jazz Listening Group

I'm relatively new to jazz so wanted to expand my knowledge hearing from others who love their jazz

I thought that it might be interesting to share what we are listening to and getting your thoughts

Each person puts forward a track and we listen to it and discuss. Not always time to hear everyone's pick but we try to get through as many as possible and the one's not heard go to the top of the list for the next month

Y'know, that was recorded at the 1971 Montreux Jazz Festival just a few months before the casino burned down, which is what inspired "Smoke on the Water" from Deep Purple's Machine Head album, as they'd planned to record in the casino (and had to move to the Grand Hotel there instead).

As for the track itself, it's okay, but I'm not really much of a jazz guy. ๐Ÿค

My wife is from a village about an hours train ride from montreux so weโ€™ve been to the town a lot. Right on lac luman. Gorgeous place to visit and if youโ€™re a fan of Queen , thereโ€™s a little museum in the casino dedicated to Freddie. Loads of musical heritage in the local area

Just had our latest jazz sharing group. My pick was

from

Mingus (1979) by Joni Mitchell

A great track from a so-so album. I think that Joni's voice here is exceptional. Great song and great performance

Another track that stood out for me from the session was

I'm not a RHCP fan so would have passed me by but for the listening group. Excellent track from

Honora (2026) by Flea (UN)

All in all, a really interesting session

Had my latest Jazz Listening Group yesterday. I put forward Maiden Voyage, the title track from

Maiden Voyage (1965) by Herbie Hancock

I wasn't specific enough though and got the live version from Tokyo (1975 I think). Great track but not my pick so I'm putting Maiden Voyage from the 1965 album forward again for next month. Just goes to show that you need to be more specific.

I'm going to write a bit about some of the other tracks put forward when I get the chance

A different sort of Coltrane from that that I'm used to and a really lovely piece of music shared by one of the group during the session. Going to need to check out

Ballads (1963) by John Coltrane Quartet

From which this track comes
