Yep, tis such a shame.

I've always thought that, from a critical standpoint, the Monkees were one of the most underrated sixties pop groups.

Neil Diamond and Carole King both wrote songs for them, amongst other songwriters with less-household names (they also wrote a number of songs themselves, especially Mike). Jack Nicholson co-wrote the movie they starred in. John Lennon supposedly told them they were what the Beatles wanted to be (ironically, since they were created to be a Beatles-esque band to draw the Beatles' fanbase to watch a TV show). Pity a band with so many highly respected talents backing them fell apart and dropped so quickly from the height of their careers and were never respected for their sound or the music they made...to this day they're thought to be blacklisted from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Peter Tork is convinced it's because of just one of the board's voting members.

EDIT: should also mention that The Monkees used their star power to help Jimi Hendrix launch his career (he opened for them for 6 dates on one of their tours before walking away from them in a huff) and also featuring Frank Zappa in an interview with Mike I think at the end of one episode of their show. The Monkees were also electronic music pioneers - little known fact - as they were the first commercial band to make use of the then-new Moog synthesizer.

I've actually never heard a Monkees album. Got one to suggest? A good compilation, maybe?

Best one: Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd.

But don't skip The Monkees, More of The Monkees, Headquarters, or The Birds, The Bees, & The Monkees. All solid albums...wouldn't bother with compilations, they skip too many good songs.

RIP Davy Jones. I have so much 60's music lover, I will take part. By the way, just because of the name of Davy Jones, one of David Jones changed his name to David Bowie!

just taken Charicature's recommendation and am currently listening to 'Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd'. Very good 60's album...I might even purchase it off amazon actually....
