I've enjoyed Johnny for the past number of years and I owe it all to the record, "At Folsom prison" and the song "Hurt" form the American IV record. Some industry insiders have said "Hurt" is the greatest cover of all time. I think I saw/heard that on the VH1 100 greatest artists program. At any rate, Happy hunting!
Johnny Cash is a favorite of mine, and really you can't go wrong no matter where you start. I'll agree that At Folsom Prison would be a great starter album; or if you're looking for a studio record, One Piece at a Time is my personal favorite and would make a good starter I think.

I'm a huge, long-time Johnny Cash fan and those two suggestions are excellent!!! Really, it's hard to go wrong with Johnny Cash. He's done a ton of quality recordings. I don't usually say this, but...you might also want to check out some of the greatest hits collections, if you're just starting to become familiar with his large body of work. _________________ Speakers of the House DJ
A good place to start, it has highlights from his whole career, including the better tracks from his amazing 'American' albums
Oh, good! I thought I was the only person that was going to recommend the taboo C word. I like the Love-God Murder-Life compilation myself where the songs are arranged thematically. The Murder one is especially great. It's amazing how many times he wrote and / or performed songs about this dark subject. Folsom Prison is quite an experience too.
I also think III is the best of his 90's albums. Working with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was a good move.
The previous suggestions work (Folsom Prison, American IV) but I'll throw out some others - Hello, I'm Johnny Cash, At San Quentin, and any of his compilation albums. Johnny Cash was a singles artist. You're best starting with a solid comp.
