This semester I'm making a documentary about my (white) friend's rap band. It's in early planning but so I'm currently brainstorming ideas. They're all very passionate about it and we're thinking of focusing on the 'underdog' side of the story, and about the difficulty of breaking into the industry.
Since it's about music, I thought I'd ask if there's anything you guys would like to see in it, any good interview questions or facets of the theme that you'd like to see the doco explore? Any good reference material?
Shall be fun! 😁

Gary sure puts up a sensible answer and all but you know what would be great?
A mythos.
Make it so they are more than your regular guys. Put them on a parthenon above the viewer. Keep the camera on them at all times and don't try and script it. Keep it natural. Make a legacy. 😄
It depends on the personality of the person/band being interviewed.
If they are charismatic and have a sense of humor (and really HIGH) then just let them go and do it off the cuff and spontaneously. Like in this interview.
Damn, I guess 1973 was a great year to do interviews 😁
Again, if you have a band that has a good sense of humor (or a Keith Moon type) Just turn em loose and play straight man.
What I like about humorous interviews, and this is definitely one of my favorites, is that it shows the band just being like friends and not all full of themselves.
I mean, consider the fact that the WHO were HUUUUUUGE in 1973 yet still acted like kids on a schoolyard.

The wonderful Johnny Marr being interviewed about The Smiths' album 'Strangeways here we come' and about him and his music in general only weeks before The Smiths split. Candid but not as controversial/annoying as Morrissey.

Actually that pretty much describes the guy. He's an attention loving performing arts student with lots of opinions and not a huge amount of filter. Pretty much perfect for a doco.
