This subject rather hi-jacked another thread so I thought, maybe, it warrants its own.

It was interesting in the sense that it sparked debate about the meaning of ‘guilty pleasure’ and whether the concept should even exist.

Lethelnezzel wrote: “If you are publicly ashamed of music that you enjoy, you're an imbecile.” Whilst I agree with this in the main, we’re all human and so surely our insecurities about certain things get the better of us from time to time.

For the record, my definition of ‘guilty pleasure’ is: something you like but perceive as being thought of as rather less than cool in the wider world.

To qualify, it’s not like you have to own albums by these artists (though you might), just that the songs make you smile (or stir up some other emotion you consider pleasurable).

To kick off (and to fess-up), I give you:

The Bee Gees
Boney M
Barry Manilow

I stand by what I said. I have argued many a time, publicly amongst friends, that Baby by Justin Bieber is a truly great pop song. I feel no shame or guilt about this, though society pressures me to. I understand we all have insecurities (I have loads), but I pity anyone who cannot publicly admit that they like a certain song or artist for fear of ridicule.

I agree with you and that's the way it should be! It's just that, generally, people tend not to. Hopefully this thread can be cathartic to some!

Getting Ne-Yo on a hook virtually guarantees a great song. Sadly, his solo work is appalling.

Depends on the crowd. For the more close-minded, I tend not to mention that I like Taylor Swift or Frank Sinatra's depressing concept albums.

But Only The Lonely and In The Wee Small Hours are stunning, and almost the epitome of cool. In what crowds are they considered 'guilty pleasures'? Confused
