I have diligently reviewed the most overrated albums thread and have realised that although it seemed like there are no sacred cows and that every album/band in the top 50 got a beating it turns out this is not the case. I wonder if people forgot to mention them only because they did not think of them or because these are truly artists/albums that nobody finds overrated:
The only artist with 2 albums in the Top 50 that was not mentioned as overrated was: Joy Division
Other artists nobody mentioned as overrated: Pxies, Charles Mingus, Jimy Hendrix, The Who, King Crimson, John Coltrane, Talking Heads, Neil Young, Nick Drake
Borderline case: Although no one mentioned Hunky Dory by David Bowie as overrated the album Ziggy Stardust was mentioned so David did not escape that thread unscathed.
Personally I find that if there has to be only one sacred cow that nobody will ever see as overrated, it has to be Jimy. Even if you do not like him, you are not likely to see him as overrated. Although after all I have read in the overrated album thread nothing would surprise me anymore.
I think all artists/albums you mention here are more or less overrated.
Jimi Hendrix has a handful of outstanding songs, but a lot of filler on all albums of his I've heard.
I judge him by his song-writing and not his guitar playing, at least not at this stage of my rock music-listening.
My favourite in the poll would be In The Court, which I'd even say I love, but it's overrated in the sense that it's not quite the prog masterpiece it's set out to be. The song structures on several of the tracks are too simple and repetitive for that. Plus there's Moonchild wich starts off beautifully and then, you know...
Doolittle is good but nowehere near as good as it's set out to be.
None of the other ones I really like (that's including Joy Division. ESPECIALLY Joy Division). If that's a problem with me not having the tools to appreciate them yet I do not know, but for now I'm slapping the overrated label on them so I can sleep well at night.
I'd like not to talk about skin colour, but actually all black artists who are not in hip hop. I never see negative comments towards any of these jazz men or soul singers.
What do you mean? They're ranked no 42 on the site, ahead of Black Sabbath, Genesis, King Crimson, Stevie Wonder, The Kinks and Simon and Garfunkel to mention some. Of course they would be considered overrated by someone who doesn't like them.
