Is it "Closer" as in "I am closer to the door than you," or "Closer" as in "The album closer is a really great track." I always thought it was the former, but I recently met someone who was convinced that it was the latter, so I figured I'd ask y'all.

Dig around Youtube and watch some interviews. All of the band members refer to it as 'Closer' as in "I am closer (nearer) to you."

It was picked to be ambiguous though - so take what you will out of the title.

🤣

I love how often this comes up. It's Closer (as in nearer). Although considering the events after the albums release either title is rather eerie.

Closer to the end? That would make it even more depressing

Yeah Hayden asked before and I think my answer was that in the UK we don't generally use closer in the sense of something coming to an end, so I'd have thought closer as in 'nearer to', how the word is normally used here. I never even wondered about it until it was asked on here.

Hadn't even thought of the latter until now.
Did they know it would be their final album? If so, it would be a pretty cool name.

Unless Ian Curtis was already planning his suicide (which I doubt), there's no way they would've known it would be there last album. I agree, though, that would've been an awesome last album name.
