So anyways, I was thinking to myself a while back, when I listen to music, what do I like about it? I never asked myself this previously. When listening to music, I generally look for a calm sounding album that possibly has a depressed sound about it. Something I could fall asleep to because it puts me in such a calm mood. I also look for music that's possibly catchy, but not trying too hard to act like it is something that it isn't. Other times I look for music that parodies or just makes fun of other music. it really depends, but I don't listen to music just because of it's sound. The lyrics also make a difference too. Anyways, what do you look for in music?
Catchy, yet not too poppy. Interesting, yet not pretentious. Complex, yet understandable. Beautiful, yet not too "feel good pristine"; or ugly, yet not unlistenable. Emotional, yet not cheesy. Original, yet not originality for the sake of it, but as something good nobody had thought of before. Depends a lot on what the artist tried to make with a certain album, actually. I'm not gonna look for complexity on a Black Keys record, yet I can still enjoy it.
I enjoy a lot of different music. It kind of depends what type of mood I am in. Sometimes I like complex stuff and other times ear candy. However, the bands that seem to be my favorites are the ones that have something to say. They have the best ability of combining a point of view with music that I enjoy listening to. Artists like Bruce Springsteen, U2, and Pearl Jam.
