- Post subject: Line graph / ratings over time
|
Hello anagram adoring, audio absorbing, awesome Albummaster and alliterative audience,
A favorite website of mine has the ability to track a song/album/artist's popularity over time. That well-known site tracks the number of listens and then maps that number onto a very convenient line graph. Google does it to represent the popularity of certain words or phrases over time. The initial coding might be a tad complicated but a visual representation of data would be awesome. So, I would like to see:
A line graph representing the popularity of a given entry over time. The x-axis would certainly be days, months or years. I'm open as to what exactly the y-axis will be but it would certainly include our weighted ratings.
Thank you all,
Paris

Close, very close actually. In that thread the independent variable is based on the overall chart. That's not what I'm recommending, although its a great idea.
I want to see the ratings against the backdrop of time rather than an album's ranking as the independent variable.

do you mean how the average has changed over time, or how many ratings were made at each point in time? I'm just trying to figure out the 'popularity' element mentioned in your original post. I'm not sure weighted ratings over time would be that insightful (although I might be wrong).

Yea to clarify, I think both the change in average ratings over time and the average number of ratings at a certain point in time (or buzz surrounding an album) would be interesting to see. It be great if you could use all the data we currently have to make a line graph that incorporates both above mentioned aspects.
The buzz surrounding an album would be a really interesting thing to see. Maybe one colored line for the average number of ratings at a given point in time and another color for the changes in average rating score over time?
I hope that makes sense because this morning I had a general idea of what I wanted but I think the above makes my idea the most concrete I can make it? Whatdoya think?

it does sound interesting and if I had unlimited time and resources, I'd love to see this kind of thing here. It also relates to another idea that I had which is having an activity stream for each item on the site, so you can see for any item what interactions have taken place with it over time e.g. ratings, comments, fav's, chart entries, etc (I guess similar in concept to Facebook's activity stream). There is something along those lines listed on the roadmap for 2013. I expect it'll be the second half of the year before this kind of feature is introduced (mainly due to time constraints and some of the older requests having priority).
