I was reading the thread about first-time experiences in listening to certain albums, and it made me realize how many of my favorite performers came to me by way of lists like the ones here.
In my case, it was one specific list: Rolling Stone magazine's list of the greatest 100 albums of the previous twenty years, published in 1987. At the time, I thought the list was ridiculous; I'd never heard of 30-40 of the albums listed and I'd only listened to, perhaps, 10-12 of the albums that charted. But the list had been compiled through a survey of music critics, not fans or performers, and the writing was very descriptive and entertaining. So, over the ensuing years, I read, and I bought, and I listened. And my tastes completely changed. It's important to note that this was before the Internet; there was no sampling of an album to be heard on Pandora or Spotify. There wasn't even Napster. If no one I knew owned the album, I had to buy it and trust my luck. And, having made the investment, I made sure I gave the music a fair shot. I don't think I'm as patient about music today.
Anyway, I'm wondering how many users had their ears opened by similar experiences, either through the press or sites like this one. I guess that's kind of the point, isn't it? So maybe I should be specific: which charts/lists have most influenced your musical tastes?
Magazine lists mean nothing to me. They never have for albums, songs, musicians etc. Rolling Stone says Smells Like Teen Spirit is a better song than Stairway. WHAT??

Stairway's never really done much for me, although that solo is fantastic.
Anyways to get back on topic, I don't really put that much credence in published lists, as they are usually made my many people with different tasts's so they are usually classic heavy. Plus, no list is going to have the same taste as me.
He's absolutely right. Twenty years from now, everyone will think of music history through the Neil Weaver Objective Pavement-Pop Canon (NWOPP). In fact, the only thing they will be furious over is how the 2013 record A Vessel To My Indeptitude was missing on said canon.
