Not for everybody. Besides, I assume the tournament is about musical quality, not 'cultural significance'.

Apologies, 90s music is "my baby" and as such i can get very excited.
Elsewhere, I believe what the tournament is based on is decided by the individual voter.

If the 90's is your baby, I recommend you set up a playdate with some of the nerdy indie rock babies ( not just the one's that got all the toys and attention) at the park.

Sweet! Where should i start? Any suggestions? really its my memories that make it so. It was a great time for me. The music was another party/ entity that was present, which i fell in love with. perhaps much like the baby boomers and the beatles, generally speaking.

It was a great decade for music. In years to come I reckon it would be rated a little higher than it is now.

90s ruled. Wu-Tang Clan defined it for me. So many great albums from them in the mid 90s, and RZA's production style is still being ripped-off today.

Enter the Wu-Tang
Liquid Swords
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
Tical
Ironman
Return to the 36 Chambers

6 hip-hop albums that would easily make my top 50, and this is only from 93-96. It's too bad Inspectah Deck didn't get a chance to drop a solo album during that first wave. It probably would've been another classic to add to the Wu collection.

This video was so epic. I remember my first time seeing this:

Never been a huge fan of Biggie. He's good but so overrated.

He's probably not as influential as Wu-Tang but his raps were the most aggressive anyone has ever had. Sure, everyone can sing about being a gangsta, but I feel like Biggie was a gangsta and I feel like you can hear that he killed several people in his voice. I don't get that feeling from Nas, Wu-Tang, Jay-Z, 50 cent, Tupac, no one. That doesn't mean they're not great rappers, it just means I feel like they're more into making music than their lifestyle, while I feel that Biggie could have sung his raps while killing.

Anyway, the 90s are amazing:

grunge
Nirvana-Nevermind
Nirvana-In Utero
Nirvana-Unplugged
Soundgarden-Badmotorfinger
Soundgarden-Superunknown
Hole-Live Through This
Pearl Jam-Ten
Alice in Chains-Facelift
Alice in Chains-Dirt
Mudhoney-SuperfuzzBigMuff

rising alternative scene
PJ Harvey-Dry
PJ Harvey-Rid of Me
PJ Harvey-To Bring You My Love
My Bloody Valentine- Loveless
Breeders-POD
Radiohead-Bends
Radiohead-OK Computer

rap scene
joannajewsoms list
Nas-Illmatic
BIG- Ready to Die

and many more

The 90s were definitely the golden era of Rap. Joanna has already mentioned the incredible series of RZA-produced masterpieces, I was also into Native Tongues stuff, mostly A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul.

Also important to me was the so-called "antifolk" or "neo-folk" or "alt-country" or whatever scene, with Palace Brothers, Smog, Cat Power et al.

Not to forget it was a great period for electronic music - Björk, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Daft Punk etc.

The most prominent artists from the Bristol scene were also heavily rotating in my CD player - Porstihead, Massive, Tricky (the 1st two albums), Earthling, the first Archive, Monk & Canatella etc.

Exciting decade to say the least.

I agree, memories are what make the 90's music so sick, because it's when I grew up and all the 'new' stuff at the time was intense for me. every album has a particular purpose and memory associated with it.
