What are your thoughts guys ?

Personally, I don't think they should have had change their name. Music is a form of art, this is no politic

Depends...

Of course it is. The band chose "Viet Cong" as a name, not "Form of Art".

This might come off as ignorant, but why were people offended by their band name? 😕

All them darn Canadians and their political correctness.

Well, they probably won't get an enormous fanbase among the Nam veterans. But you're right, the times they're a-P.Cin'.

Still a lot of people around who lived in or fought in Vietnam. It's sort of along the lines of calling your band The Nazis or ISIS (i'm well aware of the band named ISIS). I wasn't personally offended but could see some having issue with it.

Er... not really, mecca. You're implying that naming your band "The Jew Exterminators" and "Fighting an Invasion" are the same...

Oh wait, it's not political, sorry 😄

Yeah, bit of a shame about ISIS. They also ruined Archer. I doubt Isis (the band) would ever consider changing their name though.

But ok, I guess. Still seems very un-punk of them.

Either way, doesn't matter. Whatever. Looking forward to their next album.

Yeah, it's definitely not the same, so I was on the fence about posting it, but I think in the eyes of Nam vets it's likely similar. Since I'm not offended, I was just trying to see it from another point of view that's not really my own

And yeah, it's not the best comparison, but I understand the point you were trying to make.

IIRC they said they didn't exactly put a lot of thought in the name (the Viet Cong one), and didn't realize it could potentially offend people? From that angle I can understand they didn't have a problem changing their name. If they had chosen to be "Viet Cong" specifically to try and be provocative or to make a point, they probably wouldn't do it.
