When trying out a new band or genre, what do you think is a good introductory album for the sort?

BANDS
Gorillaz: Demon Days
AC/DC: Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Personally, I started with Back in Black. But I started the Bon Scott era with this album, and it was well worth it.
Def Leppard: Pyromania
Meat Loaf: Bat Out of Hell 2
Alice in Chains: Facelift
Alice Cooper: Billion Dollar Babies
Scorpions: Love at First Sting
Pink Floyd: The Wall
Kansas: No regular album. You'l have to start with The Best of Kansas.

GENRES
Indie rock: Funeral
Folk: Fleet Foxes, Graceland
Grunge: Dirt, Facelift
Hip-hop: Licensed to Ill

Yeah, AC/DC is a very hard band to get into, they don't make accessible music, if you don't start with this album, you'll never get them.

It's better to start listening to Built To Spill with Keep It Like A Secret I think, and to reggae with Exodus.

personally speaking, for getting into grunge I found it easier to start out with softer / more mainstream stuff like Down on the Upside, Jar of Flies, Superunknown, In Utero, and then branch out back to grunge's roots in metal w/ Dirt / Badmotorfinger. but that was just my approach, to each his own!

as for indie... well, it's difficult. but that "Cut Your Hair" track is SO DAMN CATCHY that Pavement might be a good start. Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, or maybe even the Shins could work, all three are pretty accessible w/o prior exposure to indie.

GENRES
Indie rock: Funeral

I think it should be "In the aeroplane over the sea" because it's really accesible and it takes few time to fully enjoy Funeral(at least to me)

The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet
Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
The Velvet Underground - VU & Nico
The Brain Jonestown Massacre - Take It From The Man
The Black Angels - Passover

The answer to most of the band ones would probably be their most popular album.

Meh, Franz Ferdinand's self titled is far more accessible as far as "Indie" goes, but Funeral and ITAOS aren't horrible choices, they're just not good introductory albums to Indie.

I only have one to contribute right now, but...

Post-Rock: "The Seer" by Swans.

Might seem crazy to some, but I ended up hating post-rock before I'd heard that one and loving it after, so on it goes.
