Hello fellow music lovers,

Most of you can articulate definitions of music and just have a gift at explaining yourself better than I can. I am having a hard time explaining Arena Rock to a friend of mine... please help!

Yea, pretty much this. There isn't a particular sound. It ranges from Led Zeppelin to KISS to Bruce Springsteen to anyone that plays at arenas.

Though, can the characteristics of arena rock is to have; a sing-along and athemic chorus; simple but powerful lyrics that can relate to the every-man; or just to rip off U2's musical style entirely (if they had a consistent style to begin with).

This (in addition to what others have said about selling out arenas).

Pretty much what has been written in this thread so far: arena rock best describes big, popular rock bands that tour in large venues with overblown stage production and also utilize things like big, anthemic choruses and huge guitar solos. The term is used more for a category of bands displaying these traits rather than a particular sound. Stuff like Led Zeppelin, Rush, U2, late-70s Floyd, and Bruce Springsteen epitomize arena rock for me.

I would also like to add that this term is often pejorative, akin to labeling an artist as "cock rock" or "dadrock." A lot of the alternative, underground stuff in the late 70s/early 80s like Punk Rock or College Rock was quite reactionary to arena rock, I think. Especially the DIY approach in regards to touring and selling records expressed by bands like Minutemen.

AOR is arguably a derivative style as well; a sound that focuses on a slick production and certain tone that prevailed through bands like Boston, Journey, Foreigner, Toto, Asia, etc. When referring to it as a sound you are likely referring to the similar characteristics that bound these bands together.

the majority of arena rock is also completely melodramatic. Guitar solos are a must, while drum solos are not forbidden.

I would also venture to say that arena rock focuses on a big show. When I think arena rock, my mind immediately goes to Van Halen, with David Lee Roth flying in on a zip line or whatever, doing karate kicks while Eddie Van Halen plays "Eruption" in bright, leather pants.
