Which Pavement album do you think is better, and why?

These are both stellar albums, but I feel like Slanted and Enchanted is dirty and lo-fi for the sake of being gritty and underproduced. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain also has some of my favorite songs ever, like "Elevate Me Later," "Gold Soundz," "Silence Kid," etc.

I'm of the opinion that Wowee Zowee is their best, but of these two I prefer Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. I actually prefer the production on Slanted & Enchanted, but the strength of the songs on Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is just ridiculous. Also, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain feels to me like a more concise, focused record, despite actually being a little longer, as though the band were more comfortable in what they were doing. That doesn't necessarily make for a better record all the time by any means (Wowee Zowee is a record that can't sit still, and it's my favourite), but in this case I just think it works. It doesn't have the urgent energy that Slanted & Enchanted has, nor does it have that wonderful feeling of, "here we are, this is our mission statement", but it's got this real assuredness about it and a confidence in what it's doing that makes it shimmer and shine, as best evidenced in the wonderful, lazy, alt. country loll of 'Range Life'. So yeah, I voted Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.

Slanted and Enchanted. Not feeling inspired enough to explain why in too much depth, but I guess it just feels fresher to me.

Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain by a longshot for me. I've grown to love lo-fi albums over the past few years, but for whatever reason Slanted And Enchanted never really clicked with me. I think overall the songwriting on Crooked Rain Crooked Rain is simply better, and the production is just clean enough without being overdone. There aren't really any weak points on Crooked Rain, and they found the perfect balance of experimentation and straightforward indie/alt rock. A true masterpiece.

Is it solipsistic in here or is it just me?

It's Crooked Rain for me. I like Slanted & Enchanted and all, but I the production on Crooked Rain feels cleaner and the songs are some of their best. A lot of my favorite Pavement songs ("Cut Your Hair", "Range Life", "Heaven Is A Truck") are on that album.
