You know, those songs that seem so happy at first, but reveal to have something deeper, sorta melancholic in them. Like.. Cheerful melodies with depressing lyrics? Danceable and catchy but with a morbid theme? Or just the kind that leave this bittersweet feeling afterwards...
I think some of my favourite songs are like that.

But I'm sure you know what I mean. Any personal choices?

Nick Drake does this terrifically in Poor Boy. He's done this a few times in other songs (especially on Pink Moon), but this song has some really great use of contrast between a cheerful melody and somber lyrics:

I could talk about this song forever and still never say anything about it, it's perfect, it's the most beautiful example of the ups and downs of life. Just when it gives you a moment of hope, it brings you back down to earth with a feeling of unending sorrow.

Up and poppy with lyrics that whisper...

Who cares?

When I think bittersweet my mind immediately goes to several New Order, Cut Copy, and LCD Soundsystem songs.

Uh ... OK I see two different kinds of this. There's the songs that make you ... float. Happy and sad both at once.

And then there are the songs that are happier musically but sad or dark lyrically:

I agree with these three. Also, a great song choice (really need to hear Bright Neon Love already..)

And I also agree with benpaco that there are different "kinds" of bittersweet. I think nostalgia is also a bittersweet emotion, so any song that induces that feeling (or just is about nostalgia - e.g. a bunch of AnCo songs) can fall under this category.

Someone said to me they thought Born to Run was a sad song, and it's really changed the way I hear it now.

It really is a perfect song. Builds on a sense of pulling through during the worst times, carrying on regardless of how rough things are.
