Great album
Not quite as complex as the Holy Bible but much more accessible.
I can only wonder what Richey would have thought of it..

He'd have hated it, probably.

Is it solipsistic in here or is it just me?

Oh man I love this album. I actually discovered this album because of you good folks here at BEA. I had heard so much about it (and I had already heard that Manic Street Preachers were good) so I checked out this and "The Holy Bible". I love both, but I love this one the most. Fantastic. "A Design For Life" is my jam.

I only heard this once a few months ago, and I quite remember liking it. In fact, it was in my top 100 for quite a while.

To me [Everything Must Go]'s a great album where every song is a winner. Manic Street Preachers mean so much to me because of who they were and what they stand for. They were everything to begin with, it was Rock N Roll against the world. 'Everything Must Go' stands as their greatest statement. They lost Richey James Edwards the year before it was released. What is important to remember is he wasn't some dude they found in a rehearsal, he was a friend before everything. All 4 members had known each other since their teenage years. Sean and James are cousins. Sean and Richey became best friends in school. Nicky and James were friends in the year below. Nicky and Richey became best friends in university. When Richey went through terrible times in 1994 (his writing at this time resulting in 'The Holy Bible') they were all greatly effected. The music on 'The Holy Bible' is often described as very dark on this forum. Everything came to a head in 1995 when Richey went missing. Hearing Nicky in interviews afterwards describe how he felt when they found the car by the bridge is completely heartbreaking. At the time the Manic Street Preachers we're done for. People expected them to be done. Hearing bands like 'Chumbawamba' (silly one hit wonder band) gloat how they hate Manic Street Preachers because they didn't quit makes me feel angry. The first show Manic Street Preachers played after the disappearance was supporting The Stone Roses Wembley. Nicky Wire coming on the stage "What's up? It's only us." which, in his biting humorous way, was a signal the Manic Street Preachers would march on. And that was what 'Everything Must Go' was. Listen to the track 'Enola/Alone'. Can you feel the sun coming up? It's literally I'm not giving up in song form. The title track was described by them as a "simultaneous apology and f**k you" to the people who said they shouldn't carry on. Richey's words are still there on tracks like 'Kevin Carter' and 'Small Black Flowers...' showing the great lyricist he was blooming into (both lyrics and all the ones on Journal For Plague Lovers were wrote in 1995) while the big hit 'A Design For Life' is literally... a big hit. To think afterall they have gone through they could write something which hits number 2 in the UK chart is an amazing undertaking. 'Everything Must Go' the album is the sunrising after the night which was 'The Holy Bible'. There is agony there but it's presented in such a euphoric way I can't help getting strength from it. Take 'Australia', very upbeat song with crashing guitars and pounding drums. Nicky Wire, lyric writer, wrote the song about escaping the press following the media circus and the pain from his former friend. He wrote it about getting as far away from it as possible. It's not a holiday in 'Australia' but "I literally can't take this anymore, I want to get as far away from UK/Wales as I can".

To me, Everything Must Go is the definitive statement by the Manic Street Preachers. The debut comes close to it because of the audacity about it. In truth, my chart is very similar to the ones which have 9 Beatles records. I believe in Rock N Roll and it's power to change the world. I have brought myself completely into the mythos of the Manic Street Preachers. I can relate to the feelings in 'Everything Must Go' at times while others I just sit back and enjoy it. The Beatles... they had a well known story. However, the Manic Street Preachers one is the one which changed my life.
