Bouncer See Bouncer...

This thread is about a song by Scott Walker. There is something about this song which separates it from the rest on the album 'Tilt' as well the artists later work on 'The Drift'.

It's...

... there is something terrible about it. Terrible in the darkest sense. Anybody could create a piece of music and have it described "dark". This one... has something else. Something I can fear. Something inevitable which will be bad news. Despite these negative feelings, it draws me back to listen again.

The word. Spared...

Spared!

This word feels extremely loaded next to impending doom throughout. It's the first thing which is sung too. From what were they "spared" from? What do the rest of the words mean for that matter? Do they have meaning? Is there a story behind this song?

Would it be better to never know?
