So,
I'm in the last year of school (with less than two months to finish it) and I have to choose a course for university. The entrys for the "admission test" of the federal university can be made until October 21st, so I have like ten days to choose a course, and I'm pretty desperate because I've no idea of what course to choose. This whole thing sucks.
I'd like to ask you people this: how did you choose what to course at university, or what you work in, or whatever?

Just make sure it's something you're interested in or passionate about, I can't really advise you what to do as it's your life, but just read up on courses for whatever you're into and you'll stumble upon something that catches your eye hopefully, that's how I ended up studying geology, which is awesome by the way. _________________

I majored in History, intending to go into Pre-law. By the time I'd graduated, I wished I'd majored in Drama. I would have gotten an equally useless degree, but had a lot more fun getting it. I ended up in a career in Computers, which has been rewarding. I feel like I've been part of history as I've seen and worked on generation after generation of computers.
But if I had to do it over again, I'd go into Genetics or Molecular Biology. I imagine it's like programming Life Itself, and if you're good at it it can be a very lucrative career.
So there you have four different options, History, Drama, Computer Science, and Molecular Biology. I'll give you one more: Music Appreciation. I don't know if we have any professional music appreciators on this site, who can tell the difference between an Aeolian Cadence and a B-7th Chord (I can't), but I would love to hear from people who know the technical side of music.

I'm studying Economics, mostly because I really enjoy both the mathematical part, the philosophical part and the psychological/sociological part a whole lot. Partly because I enjoy money, too, though. That said if money wasn't a problem I'd just study music and play the whole day, but like I said, I enjoy money.
I remember I chose Economics because I had read during on a bunch of topics during high school, and by the time it was time to choose I already knew more or less which courses interested me and which didn't, so read up. Get some articles or books or browse wikipedia, and there'll be a definite general topic which attracts you more than the rest. Then start reading up on it, and decide whether you like it or not.

I'm not a "professional music appreciator" but I do know a bit of theory. An Aeolian Cadence and a B7th Chord are like apples and oranges, can't be compared. A Cadence, on one hand, is the transition between two chords; the Aeolian means it's done on the Aeolian mode (or minor scale). So an Aeolian Cadence would be the transition between any two chords in a minor scale/while playing in a minor scale.
On the other hand, a B-7th chord is simply a chord, a collection of notes. Especifically, it's a B chord with an added 7th (the 7th note in the scale after B). So that's B, D#, F#, A. So yeah you can't compare them, one's a chord and the other's the change between two chords.

I'm currently in my fourth year of the cultural studies program on faculty of social sciences in University of Ljubljana. Why I chose this particular course and especially why I'm still sticking with it, is a bit of a mystery to me. I didn't have much of an idea, much like yourself, so I picked something that looked appealing. Also, I wanted to get away from math. I was always good at it (and being a chess player, I think most people expected me to study something like that), but I always hated it.
And I guess the reason I haven't quit yet it's because in this country there are a lot of benefits to being a student.
Assuming that Brazil is more of a "normal" country in this regard, and that being a student means certain costs, I'm not sure I can advise you to do the same as I did. However I will say this. We live in a time where the formal education gives you knowledge, but not necessarily a job. You can choose whether you want to pursue the career in the field you're studying, or you can use that knowledge in a completely different field. I was interviewing this professional photographer/photojournalist a few months ago, and her formal education was a degree in agronomy and a masters in social anthropology. So go figure...
So, you know.. Try and not pick something that you think you'll hate, but whatever is it that you end up studying, try and get the most out of it as you can, and always look for other things you're interested in (music, writing, photography, programming, web design, whatever). Then who knows what's gonna happen. It's life.

I took the only thing I thought I could be good at. It worked.
