Lisa Germano is a fantastic artist. You really can't go wrong with Geek the Girl- which is undeniably Germano's masterpiece- but I also love Happiness. Not to take anything away from J Dilla, though, Donuts is a masterpiece, I just prefer Germano.
Difficult. Germano is fantastic, whilst much of my favourite Dilla work isn't solo in the sense that they're beats made for other artists to rap over. I mean Donuts is dope, but it isn't home to 'Bullshit' or 'Got 'Til It's Gone' the 'Ill Vibe' remix or 'Peer Pressure' or 'Keep It On' or that remix of 'The Light' (oh my god, those flute-sounding things) or 'Didn't Cha Know?' or 'House of Flying Daggers' or... well, you get the point. That said, many of these beats are available on compilations and mixtapes so I guess there's no reason for them not to count as solo work. After all, as far as the beats go they are his work, in the most singular, solo sense. It seems silly to discount a hip-hop producer whose work stands alone as an artistic entity in itself on the basis that many of his best moments were meant for collaborative purposes. Both artists are great, but when it comes down to it I prefer Dilla so that's where my vote is going. But I'd take Geek The Girl (my favourite Germano record) over Donuts any day.
