Originally released in 1952 following recording in December 1951, this recording is among Wilhelm Furtwängler's best. When originally released, naming conventions for Schubert's symphonies weren't uniform, so while we now consider this to be Symphony No. 9, in 1952 it was released as Symphony Nr. 7 in Germany and No. 9 in UK/USA. To add to the confusion, Furtwängler and the Berlin Philharmonic recorded the same symphony in 1942 (also in Berlin). Both versions have been released on dozens of compilations.

I don't believe this release was a compilation. The artwork here on BEA is the re-release CD artwork (from 1995ish), because the original was basically just a wax paper sleeve. Schubert's "Great C Major" symphony took up 3 LP sides, and the much shorter Haydn symphony (also recorded in late 1951) was included to fill out the final side of the 2nd LP. I don't think either was released any earlier than in the set together.
