Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 15% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.1/100, a mean average of 75.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 10.6.

Shaking Hand (SH - UK - Jan 26) – Shaking Hand
16.01.26
Shaking Hand sound like a band acutely aware of dynamics, texture and tension, but slightly allergic to fully letting rip, preferring to let everything seep rather than spill. The guitars are all serrated shimmer and nervy restraint, circling post-punk tautness and slow-burn indie without ever collapsing into chaos, while the rhythm section plods with deliberate patience, as if daring you to blink first. Critics keep noting the control, the discipline, the sense of a group building atmosphere brick by brick, and you can hear it everywhere: repetition used as hypnosis, hooks disguised as afterthoughts, crescendos that stop just short of catharsis out of sheer bloody-mindedness. It’s impressive in a damp, grey-skied way, but occasionally frustrating too, like watching someone light a match and then immediately blow it out to admire the smoke. There’s craft here, confidence too, but also the nagging sense that the band are deliberately keeping the knives blunt, content to bruise rather than cut, and quietly daring you to call them on it.
