Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by albumceleste (2020)
100 grrreatessst albums of all time -yeah sure-.
I go by strict rating order. And then I go by whatever I feel at the moment I am making the list within the albums that have the same rating.
Roughly the first 20 I rated 9/10, so any of those could be nr1 any given day.
Then roughly up to nr60 all are 8/10. From there on the last 40 are 7/10 with another hundred or so albums left out with that same rating so whatever...
This list excludes academic music with a few exceptions when the composer is involved in the recording in a way or another, so mostly rock, pop, jazz and some folk.
I'm adding one or two relevant quote on every chart album but it will take some time.

several times. And as you go over it you start to hear more and more things. He's
done something that's left the whole field ridiculously in the back of him." - Phil Ochs [First added to this chart: 10/29/2017]
with sketches which indicated to the group what was to be played. Therefore, you
will hear something close to pure spontaneity in these performances. The group had
never played these pieces prior to the recordings and I think without exception the
first complete performance of each was a "take." - Bill Evans [First added to this chart: 10/29/2017]
attempt to sugarcoat what he was trying to say, or play. It was hard-core, more than
anything I had ever heard. After a few listenings I realized that, on some level, I
had found the master, and that following this man's example would be my life's
work.” ― Eric Clapton
“When Johnson started singing, he seemed like a guy who could have sprung from the
head of Zeus in full armor.” ― Bob Dylan [First added to this chart: 10/29/2017]
"It lasts about an hour... and you feel surprised, as if suddenly waking from a brief dream, when it is over." - Kim Echlin [First added to this chart: 10/29/2017]
would choose Brian Wilson. Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have happened.
Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds." - George Martin
"I figure no one is educated musically 'til they've heard 'Pet Sounds.' I love the
orchestra, the arrangements – it may be going overboard to say it's the classic of
the century – but to me, it certainly is a total, classic record that is unbeatable
in many ways. I've often played Pet Sounds and cried." - Paul McCartney [First added to this chart: 10/29/2017]
"The musicians played cards, I wrote out a song, we'd do it, they'd go back to
their game and I'd write out another song." - Bob Dylan [First added to this chart: 10/29/2017]
try and recreate, on record, a live performance as accurately as possible. Without
being too pompous, we decided to go into another kind of art form, where we are
devising something that couldn’t be done any other way. We were putting something
down on tape that could only be done on tape.” - George Martin
"A 40-piece orchestra, wearing funny hats and clown noses, generated a tremendous
orchestral tsunami the likes of which had never been heard before – certainly not on
a pop record.” - Darryn King [First added to this chart: 10/29/2017]

Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)
This chart is rated in the top 10% of charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a mean average rating of 89.0/100. The trimmed mean (excluding outliers) is 88.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.3.
