Yes. Her milkshake really does bring all the boys to the yard. And yes, it’s home is on the third album by Kelis, 2003’s Tasty. Yes, that song is one of the biggest earworms in pop history, and it’s still annoyingly quoted to this day. And yes, it’s mostly what Kelis is remembered for. But the truth is, “Milkshake” is a pretty great pop song, and Tasty is a much better album than you might remember it to be. Her first two albums had done little, and Kelis was in need of a hit. She got one, and there were three more hits on the album, albeit only in the UK. Still, Kelis had arrived, and it was justified. She had previously worked almost exclusively with The Neptunes, but here she branches out and collaborates with a variety of producers and artists. And for the most part, it works just fine.
Aside from “Milkshake”, there’s also a collaboration with Andre 3000 (OutKast) in “Millionaire”, “Trick Me”, and “In Public”, which was performed with Nas before they married and divorced in a flurry of abuse charges. The rest of the album is a strong mix of soul and fun pop tracks, showing that she does have a diverse talent. It’s an improvement over her previous efforts, but it’s also her commercial and critical peak. After Tasty, Kelis has released just three albums, the last being over a decade ago (2014’s Food). She has put out a handful of singles, but that’s been it. After her split from Nas, she remarried and had a second child, but her husband died in 2014 at just 37 years old. There may be more music from her eventually, but for now, Kelis lives fairly quietly in Kenya. [First added to this chart: 12/02/2025]
