In my opinion, Rick Rubin's American Recordings series of collaboration with Johnny Cash is the pinnacle of Cash's career. American III and IV are special because they capture the aging Johnny confronting mortality and singing with a vulnerability that had been rarely, if ever, heard in the history of recorded music. The man in black included a faith perspective into most of his work, especially since the 60s. The American series was no different, and American IV includes meditations on judgment and the after life like "When the Man Comes Around" and "We'll Meet Again." It also has two secular songs which Johnny absolutely transformed into psalm-like prayers: "Hurt" and "The First Time Ever I Saw Her Face." [First added to this chart: 03/05/2023]

Genre defying Sufjan Stevens is one of the most critically acclaimed recording artists in popular music of the last quarter century. Stevens' stated intention, since abandoned, to make an album inspired by each of the fifty states drew a lot of attention, but overlooked was the sincere and strong faith perspective driving the two albums he did complete (Michigan and Illinois) and the contemporaneous stripped down volume, Seven Swans. Stevens created a celebration of a God-haunted Midwest. Of the three records I mentioned, Illinois is considered by most to be the masterpiece. [First added to this chart: 03/05/2023]

What did you do during the 2020 quarantine? If your name is Harry Connick, Jr. then you made an album inspired by your Catholic faith and the God you grew closer to during the downtime and solitude forced by the pandemic. The album includes well chosen covers of gospel standards, excellent originals, and even a Catholic folk-mass favorite "Be Not Afraid" which Connick manages to absolutely transfigure.
