This is the album that really put Beach House on the map, which is good because a lot of times people will tell you to just "come on out to my beach house!' without giving you proper directions.

It's an odd choice of cover art for an album that really doesn't convey a feeling of isolation — it's more like classic shoegaze pop really, and probably their best album overall. But the Brother Kite were never the sort of band to do what their listeners expected, nor were they all that good at advertising, apparently.

Just so you'll know, the High Violets' first EP, "Dream Away," was released in 1999 — 11 years *earlier* than The National's hit album "High Violet," which might appear later in this chart if I'm feeling really, really generous. Meanwhile, this is the High Violets' best album, and it should have been a much bigger hit than the National's album, but I'm guessing there was some sort of mix-up at the CD pressing plant.

The thing about APOF is that a lot of their songs kinda sound a little "samey," but it's such a good sound you just have to like them anyway. They've made five albums (give or take), but their debut is the one that gets all the "ranking points." This is their third; my personal favorite is actually more of an EP (or mini-album) called "Young Fight" that was released just before this. But this one is just as good as the others as far as giving you an idea of what they sound like, and all that stuff. Maybe I just like them because I hate amusement parks and have been justifiably accused of being a pyromaniac on more than one occasion, but there are probably worse reasons to like bands.

This is the last of the three Venus 3 albums (the Venus 3 were Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey, and Bill Rieflin). It's probably the least poppy, snappy, and "fun" of the three, and there's also no single like "Up To Our Nex" (from Goodnight Oslo) or "'Cause It's Love" (from Olé Tarantula), but to be fair, if you assume that the albums were recorded the year before they were released then this would have been recorded in 2009, and 2009 was a much more depressing year than 2005 and 2008. So hey, give the guys a break.

People are always getting this band confused with The Dismemberment Plan, though I don't know why because depreciation and dismemberment are totally different concepts. (Okay, maybe not "totally.") Also, when I say "people" in this context, I of course mean me, personally, as a confused individual. But in any event, this is the album with "Blue Lily" on it, which would have been my choice for 2010 Song of the Year if I had actually been keeping track of such things at the time.

Air Formation were a kind of "majestic sadgaze" band, led by singer/guitarist Matt Bartram, whose voice is somewhat reminiscent of Peter Perrett (The Only Ones) or Stephen Duffy (The Lilac Time), which is a good thing, mostly. It's not the sort of voice you usually hear over music like this, but it makes them fairly distinctive within shoegaze-land. This is their fifth album (out of seven), and probably their best, though not so much so that you should consider resorting to self-harm if you already bought one of the others instead.

To my ears, this is easily the best of Crowded House's four studio albums since their return in 2007 (with "Time on Earth"). But CH has always maintained high quality standards, so it's not like the other three are terrible or anything like that. They've probably got a whole big "Quality Assurance Department" that takes care of things if they ever threaten to release substandard product.

One of the interesting things about the Juliets, from a purely personal perspective, is that they appeared at the same time Bandcamp.com first started publicly promoting itself, and they were quick to jump on the Bandcamp bandwagon. So they ended up being the very first band I ever listened to on Bandcamp! And the album is still there, too. Back in the old days, you had to pay if you wanted to download it, but now you can "name your own price." Whee! It took a while for me to find a band on Bandcamp that I liked better than the Juliets, too... I eventually did, of course, but it looked pretty dicey there for a fairly long time.

If you count their "Just Like a Ghost" EP as an album, which I do, then this is the third SDFP album out of four, unless you also count their "Shift Another Color" EP as an album, which I don't. Sometimes I just don't know what's wrong with people.
