This chart is dedicated to all those USA artists who are either lesser known or completely unknown but have included a Dylan cover song on an album.
This first chart in the series will closely follow Dylan's songwriting chronology, beginning in November 1961.

March 1962: Bob Dylan
May 1963: The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

Track 12 - Talkin' Bob Dylan Imitators Contest Massacre, Disaster, Paranoid Blues (aka Talkin' New York & Talkin' Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues).
Dylan recorded Talkin' New York on 20 November 1961 and it was released as track 2 on his debut March 1962 'Bob Dylan' album.
Steven Keene's partial cover of this song is the only known recorded version.
(Note: Talkin' Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues was recorded by Dylan in April 1962 during the 'Freewheelin' Bob Dylan' recording sessions. It failed to be included on the album and was subsequently released on the March 1991 'The Bootleg Series Vol 1-3: Rare & Unreleased' box set. [First added to this chart: 07/06/2024]

Track 7 - Song For Woody
Interestingly, track 9 is titled 'Thinkin About Bob Dylan'
Dylan recorded the original version on 20 November 1961 and it was released as track 12 on his March 1962 debut album 'Bob Dylan'
There are less than 10 covers of this song - apart from Stan Ridgway below, the best would be Dave Van Ronk's on his 1980 'Someone Else, Not Me' live album - although it is titled 'Letter To Woody'. [First added to this chart: 11/10/2023]

Track 13 - Woody ((aka A Song For Woody)
This would be my favourite cover of Dylan's first officially released written song.
This entry concludes the covers from the debut 'Bob Dylan' album - an album that only had 2 original songs. [First added to this chart: 03/25/2025]

Track 12 - The Old Man (aka Man On The Street)
Dylan recorded this song (one of 3 original songs) on 22 November 1961 as part of the 'Bob Dylan' (debut album) recording sessions. The song did not make the cut and was released 29 years later on The Bootleg Series Vol 1-3: Rare & Unreleased.
Dylan had previously performed this song (maybe for the first time) at the Gaslight Cafe on 6 September 1961 (a few weeks before being 'discovered' by Robert Shelton). The song was then known as 'The Old Man' and Dave Van Ronk was at the cafe on the night and remembered the song - such that he recorded the song, along with it's original title, on his 1966 'No Dirty Names' album. Dave has subsequently recorded the song 'live'. There appears to be no other cover versions of this song. [First added to this chart: 02/22/2024]

Track 2 - The Death Of Emmett Till
Dylan recorded the original song in early 1962 as a demo track. It has never been released on a studio album but was included in various unofficial bootlegs circulating in the late 60's/early 70's. The song was eventually released on the October 2010 'Bootleg Series Vol. 9: The Witmark Demos: 1962-1964'.
Ben's cover is the only known 'sung' cover of this song - and the interpretation is exceptional.

Track 2 - Let Me Die In My Footsteps

First recorded by Dylan in July 1962 but no released until 1985 'Biograph'.
There are less than a handful of covers of this song - perhaps the best is by Odetta on her 1965 'Odetta Sings Dylan' album. [First added to this chart: 11/10/2023]
