Best of May

Billy Woods delivers one of the most experimental, grim, and moody records of his career. The dude can't miss, and this might be the best he’s ever rapped and sounded. It’s incredible that after years of listening to Woods, Backwoodz Studioz and affiliated artists, I’m still taken aback by just how great he manages to sound on each new record.

Best of September

It's been a while since a pretty typical indie record has completely stunned me like this one. "Typical" may be a bit of a stretch, since there are some excellent krautrock-style jams here, as well as a lot of eccentric ballads, and on top of that Cameron Winter's bizarre vocal performances. It's an extremely varied record for what it is, but every single track is killer, pun intended.

Best of November

Recorded live across multiple venues in Croatia, the Sinkauz brothers (bassist Alen and guitarist Nenad), drummer Marco Quarantotto, and the legendary saxophonist Rob Mazurek create a bleak, industrial and sometimes cosmic improvised jazz dystopia. At times, the music dissolves into squeaky electronic soundscapes, but then on the very next track the band charges into full-on rock passages. Through it all, the performances remain thought-provoking and instantly enjoyable (if you're into avant-jazz, at least).

Some of the nastiest and coolest performances in noisy music of recent times. I'm blown away. It's in every way an extension of Sprain's latest work. Way more chaotic, seems almost completely directionless at times, but, almost paradoxically, it's a more complete work than Lamb as an Effigy. Not necessarily straight up better, but more well rounded. It's incredible that this is comprised of hundreds of hours of live recordings, session tapes and phone demos, and then glued together to form a single huge track. Incredible mixing and sound design. A custom gamelan, weird percussion work, saxophones, bells, banjos, glitchy electronics, music concrète, microtonal Mellotron drones, more developed electroacoustic parts than ever before, and a fantastic stream-of-consciousness lyrical barrage. This throws eveything and the kitchen sink at you, and it all seems to work. [First added to this chart: 06/16/2025]

Atmospheric jungle with some of the coolest folk samples you've heard. Coco Bryce can do no wrong, but this is easily his top 3 release. If you're a jungle lover, this is a must. [First added to this chart: 11/28/2025]

Best of February

Park Jiha's newest masterpiece is much more ambient and new age than anything she's done before (on studio albums at least). It might also be her best work to date.

Look I've been listening to Rory Ferrerira / Milo / R.A.P. Ferreira for quite some time. Haven't kept up with every release, but his style of rapping is like a comfort food to me - even when his music isn't groundbreaking or special, it's at the very least a fun, rewarding listen. Whenever I come across one of his records, I just hit play. Over the years, I’d pretty much accepted that he would never top So the Flies Don’t Come, especially considering his output in recent years. The Night Green Side of It took me almost by surprise. It's got some of his best tracks, incredible Kenny Segal production (that pairing is something special) and some of his most mature, fully developed, and stylistically cool rapping and lyricism.
