Madison Beer (Locket - USA - Jan 26) - Locket

This record feels a bit like Mike Watkinson at Test level - not good enough with the bat to be trusted at six, not threatening enough with the ball to justify the slot, and forever stuck doing a job without ever owning the match. The obsession with nakedness and presentation hovering over the album is pure distraction tactics, all bare skin and branding, like someone hoping the scoreboard won’t notice the lack of a century. Which is irritating, because once you ignore the posing, the music itself is tighter, smarter and far more competent than the rollout suggests. The production is clean, contemporary and properly structured, the hooks mostly land, and there’s a surprising amount of discipline in how the songs are assembled. Still, by the midpoint it starts seeking reassurance, leaning into syrupy emotional cues and glossy choruses like it’s checking whether the crowd are still watching. It’s a decent pop album that undermines itself through overexposure - solid technique, middling confidence, and too much time fiddling with the stumps instead of standing up to the bowler.
