- Post subject: How do some of you manage to listen to so much music??
|
I feel like I listen to music constantly. But in order to really feel like I have listened to an album enough I usually like to listen to it at least 3-5 times.
So my question is how the hell do some of you guys listen to so much music?!! and Also how many times do you usually listen to an album that you like but don't love [an average].
Interested to hear some of your methods [or levels of obsession ]
Cheers!

It varies on the record for me, there are some that have the same resonance on listen number one as they do on listen number one-hundred and there are others that take time to sink in. So it's really tough on answering how many times it takes for a record to "hit" me. I always keep an open mind on a record I even dislike, giving room to revisit or perceive it from a different angle; I respect the artist angle a lot. Recently, I didn't really like St. Vincent's new record but I took a different perspective, dissected it a bit and learned I didn't dislike it really. Don't have an "average", really.
Also, proper headphones >>>>>>> my speaker system (since it's so inexpensive and crap). Headphones have really made me learn to hear more and like a lot more about a record such as OK Computer by Radiohead...

I basically spend all of my time either driving, working in front of the computer, studying, in classes, gaming and with friends. I'm listening to music through all of those except during class, so it starts piling up. I must listen to around 10-12 hours of music a day, which is around 15-18 albums. I'm a slow listener, so I need around 8 listens to properly "appreciate" an album, so that's about 15-18 albums every 8 days.

Similar to Defago, I drive a lot and am in class or study a lot. My commute to school is an hour each way, and at school I have plenty of breaks where I just listen to music for like three straight hours while I work. And then when I'm at home, I listen to music while I study or play video games or whatever. The key is to look at what you're doing and ask "Can I do this while listening to music?" If the answer is yes, do it, and you'll find you end up listening to a lot more music. _________________ Progressive Rock

It makes a huge difference for me what I'm doing while I listen. If I'm working or playing high-focus video games (like action games) or talking, I register next to nothing from the music. On the other hand, I feel pretty comfortable judging most albums after two focused listens, at least well enough to decide if it's worth more time. Right now I'm doing an exploratory thing, so very few albums are getting more than three listens and most get one or two. I probably listen to about 20 new albums per week.
Even if I had more time to listen to music, I probably wouldn't because it can be mentally exhausting. Sometimes I just need quiet for a while.

Really not as much these days, considering I only have 3-4 hours at a time and it's often when I come home from work and am not really in a happy mood to listen to new music. But I still try on my days off to get plenty of listening in (when you have no social life/girlfriend you need companionship somehow). This is a big difference between when I Was out in rural north dakota during the deep winter when I was literally shut inside the whole day and could listen to 10+ albums a day. Though sometimes I think trying to overload yourself with new albums at that high a pace isn't exactly better than taking one or two in a day and really getting to know a more selective group of albums really well. Or I donno, maybe just talking bollocks

There's a misconception that an album needs to be listened to so many times before you can really appreciate it, and when I first started listening to music as a hobby it was a misconception I believed. When judging an album you don't need to know the names of every song, or how the bass line sounds on the third track, you just need to see how it makes you feel. Whether or not you want to listen to an album again shows some of the albums merit, but sometimes I'm so blown away by an album I don't feel the need to hear it again until after a few months - it goes either way.
It's good practice to try and listen to at least one new album everyday, let it wash over you and then listen to the next one - I've found I've become better and better each time at judging an album from the first time I hear it with each new album. Like all things, it takes practice, which really only comes from hearing a great amount of music. The way I see music has completely changed, now wanting to hear a new album often feels like second nature, and any re-listens are times when I want to be more indulgent.
But honestly I'm really still a rookie, the number of albums I've heard is lingering under 1,000, which ,compared to some people here, is child's play.

I'm not sure this is totally a misconception. I think it just changes from album to album. A very simple, paint by numbers pop album may take one listen because you've basically already heard it before, but then something a bit more complex and original could take many listens to really unwrap all of the layers.
To answer the original question. I have a desk job, which offers me a lot of music listening time. on busy days it's harder to focus, so i can't handle much new stuff, but on slow days I'll put on new records and soak them in.
Also, i've got a few extra years on many of you _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

it's pretty easy to listen to a lot of music in high school and especially in college where you can really wear headphones in class if you're comfortable with that. Luckily for the music muse in me, i chose a career (computer science) that allows me to do my job AND jam to music all day.
As far as "how many licks does it take to get to the center of an album?" -- it used to be a minimum of 3 listens for me (not counting insta-loving or insta-disliking an album), but i've had less personal time to listen to music. So in order to keep the influx of "new-to-my-ears" music at the same rate, i've dropped the minimum to 2 earshots. Of course, my extensive laboratory network of monkeys in my basement usually picks my favorites nowadays. _________________ fav artists NOW | ALL-TIME favs | i listen 2 more music than u so u don't have 2!

Let's start with the basics: We've got time... Also, remember that circumstances in life change: while we may have plenty of time to listen to music today, this was not the case in the past and there is no guarantee this will continue at this pace in the future...

If a like an album, I listen to it...forever... But will this change your point of view? I suggest that you find what best works for you and this time in your life. _________________ "And can’t you see you’re in on it?
