Oh, yeah. That too.

No Ty Segall. No Mac DeMarco. & No St. Vincent. That just seems... weird to me. Those are all well loved albums on here. Think

Yeah, this is pretty weird.

That said, I always got the feeling from those albums that most people liked them but didn't love them (and conversely, may have disliked them but didn't hate the,) and considering how there was a limited amount of points to give out they probably just didn't make the threshold for many.

It may have also had something to do with me giving it as many points as I could in my poll, but still, I count it as a win

I don't think the points are the problem. Once we get more people to participate, it'll level off a bit.

Maybe a bit, but I got 32 ballots this time. It's hard to imagine that number going up much beyond 50 unless the forums suddenly start seeing a lot more traffic.

The other reason for the unpredictability of the list is that the tastes of the users here are really diverse, even if they don't seem that way on the surface. I received at least one vote (positive or negative) for 159 different albums. That means that each voter contributed an average of five unique albums to the list.

My theory is that if someone's willing to sacrifice all of their points to max out a single album, than they must really love it.

Absolutely. I like the fact that the voter can decide how many points they give an album.

the top 40 is really a respectable list, even without Benji. I love the top 10.

Totally agree. Lots of great albums all the way down that list.

All of these albums received at least one vote, but landed low due to some mix of lack of enthusiasm and/or negative votes. If I have time tonight, I'll give some more details on the negative voting.

That definitely says a lot.

Same thing happens with Pazz & Jop every year. there's hundreds of contribs, and yet it seems that every list of ten has at least a couple totally unique picks. The point system kind of allows us to say, well I know this album everyone likes is gonna get a ton of love, and I'm gonna put it on my list too, but I'll put those points towards something a bit more low profile

Here's what our top 40 would look like without negative voting:

1. Piñata by Freddie Gibbs & Madlib
2. Black Messiah by D'Angelo
3. Pom Pom by Ariel Pink
4. Benji by Sun Kil Moon
5. Lost In The Dream by The War On Drugs
6. Meshes Of Voice by Susanna / Jenny Hval
7. Run The Jewels 2 by Run The Jewels
8. Syro by Aphex Twin
9. Burn Your Fire For No Witness by Angel Olsen (tied)
9. To Be Kind by Swans (tied)
9. More Than Any Other Day by Ought (tied)
12. Salad Days by Mac DeMarco
13. LP1 by FKA Twigs (tied)
13. Plowing Into The Field Of Love by Iceage (tied)
15. They Want My Soul by Spoon
16. Perfect Hair by Busdriver (tied)
16. Sun Structures by Temples (tied)
18. Faith In Strangers by Andy Stott
19. Metamodern Sounds In Country Music by Sturgill Simpson (tied)
19. Are We There by Sharon Van Etten (tied)
19. Unflesh by Gazelle Twin (tied)
19. Zentropy by Frankie Cosmos (tied)
23. St. Vincent by St. Vincent
24. Ruins by Grouper
25. Here And Nowhere Else by Cloud Nothings
26. Brill Bruisers by The New Pornographers (tied)
26. You're Dead! by Flying Lotus (tied)
26. Sea When Absent by A Sunny Day In Glasgow (tied)
29. Bécs by Fennesz
30. Encarnado by Juçara Marçal (tied)
30. Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything by Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra (tied)
30. Black Metal by Dean Blunt (tied)
30. Ultraviolence by Lana Del Rey (tied)
30. Secret Mix by GFOTY (tied)
30. Pe'ahi by The Raveonettes (tied)
30. The Serpent & The Sphere by Agalloch (tied)
30. Free Indeed by Palmistry (tied)
38. Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave by The Twilight Sad (tied)
38. Teledrome by Teledrome (tied)
40. 1989 by Taylor Swift

This probably looks a bit more familiar to Pitchforkers, but most of the top albums were either untouched or merely nudged by the negative voting, so it's not a huge difference.

It would have been better if the year itself was better Think Lots of good ones between 1992 and 2009 for examples
