I really liked the chart without the negative voting. I'm not trying to get rid of the negative votes, though, it was interesting seeing which albums were the most controversial ones of this year. Imo when an album is controversial it shows just how great it is because of its ability to elicit strong emotions from the listener, both positive and negative.

I think a lot of it depends on why something is controversial. There are a lot of now-classic albums that were controversial in their day but then there's a lot of trash and mediocrity that was controversial as well. Sometimes the controversy still doesn't seem settled decades later (e.g., the Sex Pistols).

Is War on Drugs bravely challenging a dated Gen X aesthetic or merely reviving sounds that were better left buried? Is Benji challenging our notions of what's appropriate to sing about or taking a trendy genre to a ridiculous extreme? I don't think there's any correct answer to these questions, but the passage of time will almost certainly change the tone of the conversation.

Regardless, I totally agree that controversial albums are worth talking about, even if they end up in the negative on our list.

I get where you're coming from and would agree to some extent, but sometimes things are "controversial" because they're boring, and half of us are shaking our heads because we just don't seem to "get it". It depends on where the controversy lies. With an album like The War On Drugs', the music itself isn't controversial at all. The hype around it is what's bothering people. It's not a bad album, but it's not redefining the genre or breaking new ground. So the controversy lies in the question: what's the big deal?

Where I agree with you though is that there are times when something stirs up an emotion in me that I don't like. That certainly speaks to how well-crafted a work of art is. When it stirs nothing (like in this case), I'm going to protest it for saying nothing, stirring nothing, moving nothing, being nothing, etc.

Edit: +1 Sp4cetiger. I pretty much just repeated you, eh?

Funny, that's the way I feel about Benji, the other "controversial" album, the lyrics might be interesting but I find the music dull. You might be right that in some cases the controversy doesn't stem so much from the music breaking previously established barriers, challenging what's acceptable. Sometimes the controversy stems from our disagreements on what has value and what does not. Should something we consider to be a good album be disingenuous, popular, simple, instrumental, loosely structured, nostalgic, unoriginal, etc? In the case of Benji and Lost in the Dream it reduced to "Too many people liked this album, but I didn't, and I want to see the albums that I like".

Can we all agree that THESE were the LAMEST albums of 2015? I'd even throw in Morning Phase and Everyday Robots as well despite loving Beck & Damon.

I actually found Royal Blood and It's Album Time pretty fun. Everyday Robots was shit, though.
