I think this thread needs to be wrapped up: there are no sacred cows, so anyone who takes anything to be one is overrating it; the sacred cows in music are basically the top 100 on BEA, thread solved

My idea about Dylan is that his albums are not rated for their artistic and musical achievement, but their cultural significance. I was not around during the 60's, and I don't have the same cultural connection to his music. I don't see his music standing up as the best of all time when stripped of its cultural context. Part of that stems from his lack of talent as a vocalist, and the harmonica to me. I guess I've just never been a fan of the harmonica.

I think also, it helps that he's American, at a time when the British Invasion was reaching fever pitch

"lack of talent as a vocalist"?

Oasis albums, though I thought they were great at first. Could turn in all the albums for a greatest hits.
Soundgarden
PJ harvey, Let England Shake could not even hold my interest to finish it. (I'll eventually try again, darn close to delete)
The banana album. deleted
Bod Dylan. deleted
Narvana albums outside Nevermind, some great songs on not so great albums.
Pet Sounds. I suppose I'll eventually try again.
I cant get behind Radiohead outside of The Bends.
White stripes might possibly be overrated. I've tried a few times, some of my favorite singles. I'm going to give White Elephant another go.

I like rock/guitar albums. Plugging Wolfmother.

From a purely technical standpoint, he's right. Bob Dylan isn't a very good vocalist.

Not like that matters in the end, though. A lot of my favourite singers are actually pretty shitty.

I never understood that argument. There are great vocalists on American Idol and the X Factor, but I doubt any of the winners' albums will be as well-regarded in the future as Dylan's best work. Tom Waits has a terrible voice, but whose album would you rather listen to, his or Justin Timberlake's? Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Celine Dion have great voices, but I don't see any of their albums on here. One artist with a phenomenal voice who did make some great albums is Aretha Franklin. Great voices and artistry a lot of times don't go hand in hand though. I'll take the latter over the former any day of the week.

I like his voice and I enjoy his music, but from a purely objective technical standpoint, Bob Dylan isn't a very good singer.
