So here is an album that I've really fallen for, but is also sort of beguiling to me. It's sort of like a droney-ambient thing, but there's this constant pulse that runs throughout all 5 tracks of the album (supplied by Thomas Brinkmann), that gets embellished and painted around by Ambarchi's guitar/percussion and all the bits from countless other contributors (Jim O'Rourke, Eyvind Kang, the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra among others) filling in all the bits around, so that there's this weird combination of direct engagement and blurry zoned-outedness and it just really confuses me. But I'm pretty sure I like it. And I feel like the way this all comes together is actually kind of accessible, so although naturally this isn't going to be an album for everyone and that's totally cool, I feel like this might get some kind of interesting connection (positive or negative) out of some people. It's still not up on Spotify, but the label has just put it all on youtube today so you're in luck!
But if you're in a hurry (this is understandable with all of the hustle and bustle of today's modern society) I've embedded this youtube of the last track, and it will give you the gist. It's only 14 minutes. And 46 seconds, so basically 15 minutes.
This was gorgeous. The way those subtle pulsations formed a foundation and the other little bits of varied instrumentation danced across the surface, leading up to some really interesting percussion choices towards the end, turning drone almost psychedelic. Extremely immersive. Big up secretdad!
