I feel kind of cheeky asking for this, especially with so much piling on at the moment.

I change my overall almost daily, just shifting albums up and down based on how I'm feeling about them then and there, yet keeping up with that change on my decade and now year charts would kill me. If there was some system where lower charts could look up at higher up charts and automatically adjust and add albums until they run out (so year charts would look at decade charts and decade charts would look at the overall chart).

I have no experience in programming, but I can only imagine this wouldn't be anything easy, but it would make life so much easier.

Thanks Smile

Interesting idea. I think we might have discussed something like this before. There could be some type of 'cascade changes downwards' option, but it could introduce a whole new set of complications. I think it would be quite complicated to do this (not just the programming, but I mean more the logic of how it should work if there are different selections in each list). If the year and decade lists are just filters of what is in your 'overall' chart, then it might work ok, but some people like to include additional items which might not exist in their overall chart & the logic becomes a little more convoluted.

I agree this could be really tricky but what I would see would be an autofill of the year/decade lists based on what exists on the higher level list, i.e. when you enter something from 1979 on your overall chart, it appears on your 70s and 1979 charts. However, the autofill function may be limited to that autofill, not autoorder, meaning that it would only put it in, but you need to rank your dependent charts yourself. There could be an option that allows the user to determine whether the function merely autofills or autoorder, if you tick on autofill, all it does is include it in dependent lists when it is included in a higher level list but that is it, if you select autoorder, then it keeps the order based on the higher level chart, but any intervening album or change of order would either be impossible or would need to be done manually afterwards and would be lost everytime you resave the higher order chart. It has to be autoorder and not autorank, because there will be albums from other years in the higher level chart.

I have to admit that I always found it weird that when I first created a 1979 chart it was empty when I already had 1979 albums on my overall and decade charts. To me, the crucial element would be the autofill, when it appears in the higher level chart, it is automatically added to the dependent chart, the ordering I would not mind having to do manually.

If this could happen, my wife would love you for the time it would save me!

I'll look at adding an option somewhere where you can do this outside of the chart editor. If there were albums in your overall list from a year or decade where you don't have an existing chart, should these be ignored(?), or should it create new year and decade charts for you from those selections? I think this is quite a complicated feature, and needs a bit more planning.
