Island Intervals by Death Vessel

Listen on Bandcamp: http://deathvessel.bandcamp.com/album/island-intervals

So, the name may confuse you into thinking that you're about to hear something dark and suffocating, but instead you'll be treated to a really pretty voice. His earlier records were more folk based, but with Island Intervals, Death Vessel has gone in a new direction that seems to take influence from his former tour buddies Sigur Ros who helped make this record.

TBH the vocals annoyed me quite a bit here :/ .. The sound wasn't bad otherwise, and I think I could like this more after a few more listens.

Oh this looks interesting, and totally slipped by me despite futilely trying to scrutinize every 2014 release. Be back later with a review

Yeah, it seemed to slip by everyone despite being released on Sub Pop and having Sigur Ros involved.

hold up, the vocalists is male!? Sounds feminine as hell. Quite nice music though, very relaxing and pretty.

I know. You'd think BEA would be all over this shit. (Just started it. Sounds promising so far)

I haven't been able to listen to an ALC in a little based upon personal reasons, but this one was nice! I liked it. It had a very soothing voice and smooth music backing it. I guess what that means is that it was soft sounding and very softly textured.

I keep forgetting to comment on these, listening to it now.

vocals: SING LOWER GODDAMMIT ajrgnajrngkladf my ears

For the rest: Everything seems fairly pretty tasteful pleasant. I get the sense he's going for some expansive nature-y atmospheric mood, but to me the arrangements use lots of twinkly/ethereal sounds that don't quite capture much; it feels a bit plastic or something. I think I could get into the songwriting more with rougher production or perhaps more rustic arrangements (and vocals an octave or two lower), if that makes any sense. Not really my sort of music I suppose.

First time I've ever had someone make Jonsi sound manly in comparison. I'm still having trouble believing that was a guy. I like the vocals though, they were pretty. The whole album was really nice and pleasant, while retaining engaging songwriting and generally just being good. The song with Jonsi was fantastic in particular. Makes me want to listen to Port St. Willow for some reason. But yeah, that was really enjoyable, one of my favorites from the ALC. Still need to catch up on a couple of picks, I think I'll try and hear those tomorrow.

Thanks for listening guys.

I definitely wasn't sure if it was a guy singing until I saw them live a few years back. I love the arrangements on this record. I find the music to be subtle, but with great textures. However, I may still like his previous record better. It was relatively simple folk. Here's a taste (plus visual evidence that it is indeed a man, despite his long flowing hair)
